Tessellation Project
For this project, you are to use tessellations in a way that relates to your major. Some suggestions by major:
Fashion Design/Menswear, Textiles, Home Products, Accessories Design--create a textile that incorporates a tessellating pattern. You may choose to use this textile to create a garment, accessory, tablecloth, bed linen, etc. Alternately, research a fabric line (e.g. Marimekko) and see how tessellations and/or symmetry are used.
Here is a sweater that I purchased at a vintage store.
Advertising, Fashion Merchandising, Graphic Design--Pick a corporate logo or image. Can you tweak it so that you can tile the plane with it? Use this in a ad campaign. Or design your own corporate logo for a real or imagined company that can tile the plane. Here are some links to pictures of many corporate logos. Logo pictures 1 Logo pictures 2
Look at different typefaces.
This website shows variations of Metro (public transportation) logos worldwide. Metro logos
Interior Design--Make your own wallpaper, or look at vintage designs. How have things changed over the years? Here are 2 links to vintage wallpaper stores. Wallpaper from the 70s Vintage wallpaper
Go around with a camera and take photos of tiles you see. Can you classify the patterns? You can see some examples of floor tiles here Tile Patterns in Buildings
Here are photos of an art deco church in Bloomington, IL. What type of symmetries and/or tessellations do you see?
Two images of the church ceiling.
Two images of the stained glass windows. Note that all of the windows are purely decorative, true to the Art Deco style. This is unusual in a church as most often, the stained glass windows show saints or biblical scenes.
