HI! I'm Debbie Hydorn. I am a professor in the Mathematics Department at the University of Mary Washington (formerly Mary Washington College), located in Fredericksburg, VA (about half way in between Richmond and DC). My PhD is in Statistics (Univ of Michigan) but since I'm in a Mathematics Department I get to teach courses other than statistics. One of my favorites is our Finite Mathematics course in which I include a section on the mathematics of patterns and design. I use Peter S. Stevens' "Handbook of Regular Patterns" as a resource and Kaleidomania as a teaching tool. My university recently added a First Year Seminar requirement for which I hoping to develop a mathematics and art course. The course needes to emphasize critical thinking skills and include both writing and speaking activities.
Other courses I teach on a regular basis include lower and upper level probability and statistics courses, an introduction to mathematical modeling course, and numerical analysis. I'm doing undergraduate research this summer with two students and our projects are on (1)error analysis in GIS and (2) using the Akaike Information Criterion for transformed variables. I love helping colleagues with their data analyses in my spare time and am a member of UMW's Fredericksburg Singers (alto). Here is a link to my home page: http://people.umw.edu/%7Edhydorn/
