Tessellations in the real world

Preparation before class

Your assignment is to find as many tessellations from every day life. Look at floors, walls, tiling patterns, carpets, clothes, art, roofs, ceilings,.... These tessellations are everywhere.

For instance find:

  • a regular tessellation
  • a tessellation that uses one shape
  • a tessellation that uses two shapes
  • any other tessellation that grabs your attention

You need to find 10-15 different types of tessellations.

Take digital pictures of tessellations you see on campus. Record the location of the tessellations.

In class

Create a powerpoint presentation using the images your group found. Describe where the tessellation you found. Record all symmetries. Identify the symmetry group.

Handin: Powerpoint with pictures of tessellations, information (location,...) and symmetries.
