Tessellation Art Project
From Prep08Wiki
Bryan and I have assigned a tessellation project every time we have taught the course. We have developed two slightly different assignments. For one of the assignments the majority of the grade is based on the tessellations developed. The other assignment asks for one well thoughtout tessellation, but the majority of the grade is based on the paper the students write.
Version I - Art Focus
This version is on the Escherwiki escherwiki:Tessellation Art Project. The summary of the assignment for the students is:
- Create 10-15 rough tessellation sketches. These should demonstrate your understanding of multiple techniques.
- After making many practice sketches, create a finished artwork.
- The written (typed) report should be a short (about 2 page) discussion of your tessellation and the process you went through to create it.
The 10-15 sketches are assigned to make sure the students do experiment with all or most of the techniques developed in the course. The paper is rather short and not the focus of the assignment.
The grading rubric can be made available to students in advance, so that they know what they are graded on. We have used the following point distribution: mathematics (26 points), artistry (36 points), materials (16 points), sketchwork (20 points), written report (40 points). For a total of 138 points.
See escherwiki:Tessellation Art Project Grading Rubric for more detail.
Version II - Focus on Written Report
This version of the assignment can be found on my website Tessellation Art Project. It will be included in the Escherwiki at some point. In summary, the assignment for the students is:
- Create a mathematically interesting tessellation. Students need to turn in a finished product.
- Write a detailed paper about tessellations and symmetry in general and explain how the tessellation was created and what symmetries is has.
The grade consists of the tessellation (30%), the paper (60%), sketches and preliminary work (5%), in-class presentation (5%).
