Possible Modification

  • If your students don't all have laptops, you can do the field trip during class time and then let them create the power point as homework.

Next Topic

  • Let them draw their own tessellations. This would be an art project.

Sending them out into the real world for examples - that's a good plan. I hope, when my students are done with this material, that I've infected them for life with the habit of noticing symmetry patterns around them. Bryan 04:29, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Some Comments

We assume that students learned about tessellations and how to generate them using a fundamental piece.

The idea behind the exploration:

  • Give the students a list of tessellation types that they are supposed to find. For instance a regular tessellation, one that uses one shape, one that uses two shapes.
  • Let the students take digital pictures of tessellations that they see on campus. This is a field trip. They will find objects like carpets, floors, tiles, clothes, art, roofs, ceilings,... They should record the location of the tessellations too. Give them a worksheet for structure. This is one class period (50 min)
  • Let them share what they found, online during class (on a digital blackboard) and let them explain their pictures. They should name the type of tessellation and the isometries/symmetry groups. This is the second class period)
  • As homework the students could analyze the symmetries of those tessellations, assuming that was covered in class. This could also be part of a paper.

I moved this from the main page because on the worksheets we just want the directions to the students Barta 16:51, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
