Talk:Construction Project
From Prep08Wiki
Materials - there's some stuff that's used for flooring, called FiberRock underlayment. 1/4" thick, gypsum. It's real solid, sold in 3x5 foot sheets that cost about $7, and cuts with a utility knife + snapping. (I just put some on a floor). It might work, although it's heavy for its thickness. Certainly a lot more solid than cardboard.
Or, you could get sheets of foam insulation board. Light, but I'd say still tougher than cardboard. There's also this product called GreenGuard that goes under siding. I'd say you should hit your local home depot and browse.
What about plexiglass? Nice, but hard to work with and maybe pricey. Bryan 04:46, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
First question: who are you? I'd love to stay in contact as I will do something similar next semester! :)
I agree that cardboard is not such a good idea, foam board is much better. I did a "similar" project last semester where they had build a scaled model of our math building. It was successful, but I also learned that I need to be clearer in telling them what I expect. I didn't want to limit their ideas, yet there needed to be minimal requirements.
Will you let them work in groups? I chose groups last semester and one group struggled a lot... I felt like a group therapist... User:Christine
Christine! We are in a similar neck of the woods. I (Angela) am the one that put this up. I'd love to stay in touch and to find out more about the project that you assigned.
More on materials: I think I might try foam board as a good alternative. I know that triple-walled corrugated cardboard can be a good building material based on some books that I have read, but I don't know how easy that is to come by in the city. I need to take a fieldtrip myself to see how easy any of this is to come by in the city. I can get to a homedepot, but it requires getting a zipcar (I don't have a car), so I'm hoping I can find what I need at some in-town hardware stores.
I actually am not sure about having students work in groups. My students generally work in groups in class on a number of different things, but I would like this to be an individual project, mostly so that they'll have their own product at the end.
