Explorette Rosette Groups

[1] contains a number of examples of marine creatures that exhibit symmetry.

1. Examine plates plates 2,5,9 and 11.

a) What are some of the common symmetries?

b) Which are not common?

c) Do you see mostly cyclic or dihedral symmetry?

2. Look at the Calcispongiae below (bottom right in plate 5).

Image:Example.jpg

a) How many different symmetries do you see within its structures?

b) For each type, what is the classification and angle between repeating features?

3. Looking at plate 2, can you find a creature that exhibits non-isometric transformations?

a) Sketch the creature

b) What makes its structure non-isometric?

c) What common shape is formed using that non-isometric transformation?

4. Examine plate 53.

a) Do you see any structures that hint at cyclic symmetry? Why?

b) Sketch one
