Klee Exploration
From Prep08Wiki
Objective: Discover depth and symmetry in the work of Swiss artist Paul Klee
Paul Klee (pronounced "Pow-l Cl-ae") was a Swiss painter who lived from 1879 to 1940. Three examples of his work are shown below. Examine each painting and provide answers to the corresponding questions.
Part 1: Six Types
Six Types (Sechs Arten), (1930), from Wahooart.com.- Look at the painting "Six Types." Describe the painting. What shapes do you see?
- Do you see any depth in this painting? If so, how is the illusion of depth created.
- What do you think Klee was referring to in the title? What "six types" do you see?
Part 2: Curtain
Curtain (Vorhang), 1924: from the Guggenheim Collection.
- Different parts of this artwork show repeating patterns. Pick out three of these different patterns. Draw those patterns on your paper, describe any symmetry or repetition in the patterns in words.
- How are the patterns you discovered above alike, and how do they differ?
Part 3: Mosaic-Like
Mosaic-Like, 1932, from Art Institute of Chicago.
- A mosaic is an art form in which small bits of glass or tiles or other materials are combined to fill a space, often a floor or wall, by creating patterns or images. How is this painting like a mosaic, and how is it different?
- Does this painting have any symmetry? Do any of the parts of the painting have any symmetry? Be specific in your descriptions of the symmetries of the painting and any parts.
- Make a drawing that is similar to the painting, or any part of the painting, but that has more symmetry.
Handin: A sheet with answers to all questions, including the drawings from parts 2 and 3.
