Work in progress...

Some of Escher's work have the largest figures in the center of the work and some have the largest figures on the edges.

For example, compare Circle Limit I http://math.slu.edu/escher/index.php/Circle_Limit_I

and

Path of Life III http://math.slu.edu/escher/index.php/Path_of_Life_III

Students could search through Escher's work to find other examples like these or find other artists who have done similar work. One example I found is the optical illusions of Akiyoshi Kitaoka. For example,

http://www.ritsumei.ac.jp/~akitaoka/rotrays.gif

and

http://www.ritsumei.ac.jp/~akitaoka/ampan.gif.

This last example is interesting in that the largest "figures" are not on the edges or in the center, but in between...
