Susan Wildstrom: Much better
Peggy Craft: good
Wasin So: thank you
Bret Taylor has joined this chat.
Bret Taylor: I like him...
2:35 PM
David Burton: Bingo!
Sarah Raynor: it is weird that command-j put you in 1-d mode
Sarah Raynor: on a pc ctrl-j puts you in 2-d mode
David Mazur: aha!
Sarah Raynor: you have to follow ctrl-j with ctrl-m to get into 1-d
David Mazur: I was wondering about that
John Willemain: If your default is 2-d, you can get to 1-d with F5.
David Mazur: also good to know
David Mazur: thanks
Sarah Raynor: who uses menus?
Costel Ionita: jonathan cox needs an invite
Jonathan Cox has joined this chat.

2:40 PM
Russell Blyth: sorry for the delay
Susan Wildstrom: I don't think what you are doing is showing up on the screen
Russell Blyth: vnc not updating?
Phil Huling: which VNC are you connected to?
Peggy Craft: i'm seeing on VNC fine
Susan Wildstrom: the one with the numbers
Sarah Raynor: mine was stuck but is fine after restarting vnc
Rob Krueger: I had to reboot VNC
Susan Wildstrom: I rebooted too
Rob Krueger: I was using 165.134.13.229:5901
Sarah Raynor: i was on the one with the numbers too
2:45 PM
Phil Huling: ok please let us know if it stops again
David Burton has left this chat.
David Burton has joined this chat.
Peggy Craft: my VNC is frozen. will reboot.
Richard Wilders: You can smart plot more than one function at a time. Just list the numbers
Richard Wilders: Correct
Peggy Craft: "list" means inside curly braces?
Richard Wilders: smartplot((16),(15))
2:50 PM
Richard Wilders: That was just to show the syntax
Lyndell Kerley: Why not hot CTRL L to get label and enter number?
Richard Wilders: You can get all the info on this by using DerivativeTutor
Peggy Craft: I think I'm going to be running a lot of tutors in July ...
Richard Wilders: DerivativeTutor()
2:55 PM
Richard Wilders: Note that the tutors show the code at the bottom so you can go right to that.
Peggy Craft: yep, that's why I'll be running them - learning by example!
Russell Blyth: lots of good stuff
3:00 PM
Sarah Raynor: yep, ctrl 1-6 does the same here
Jen Roche: the second partials match without evaluation
Jen Roche: the first need to be evaluated
3:05 PM
Steve Hennagin has joined this chat.
Steve Hennagin: all systems work: IM, QT, vnc
Steve Hennagin: very nice
3:10 PM
Sarah Raynor: is that a compliment?
Sarah Raynor: Sushi was her original name
Steve Hennagin: Yes, please take it so.
Sarah Raynor: we decided her fate was too obvious
David Mazur: will this be on the test?
Phil Huling: immigration make her change it?
Sarah Raynor: everything is on the test
Sarah Raynor: my kids love that stuff
Peggy Craft: hey, groans mean they're awake!
Sarah Raynor: I should say, the idea for Sushi was Kris'
Sarah Raynor: not mine
Sarah Raynor: not just the name, the whole idea
Kris Green: Actually, much of this grew from an old project a TA friend of mine and I put together
Sarah Raynor: the 3d animate will take a long time
Sarah Raynor: just a warning
3:15 PM
Sarah Raynor: right, sushi
Kris Green: We should have added lables for the two paths...
Phil Huling: that's what revisions are for, and for showing it to us
Steve Hennagin: but do they both arrive at the point at same time?
Steve Hennagin: answer done: wow
3:20 PM
Kris Green: I like this one - could also graph ||x(t)-x2(t)|| as a single variable function of t
Rob Krueger: Students get very frustrated at this point
Kris Green: It's probably a memory issue - look at the mem marker (66MB)!
Sarah Raynor: yeah, we had memory issues with this worksheet
Kris Green: Might need to reduce the number of frames on the previous animations
Rob Krueger: Russ and Mike, can you speak to student frustration with Maple?
Kris Green: 25 frames seems to be much better - faster and no memory issues...
3:25 PM
Steve Hennagin: I am struggling with it, so I wonder what I can do to help my students on their journey through Maple. Perhaps we will discuss this on the listserve?
Sarah Raynor: It ran as is on my machine. Every machine is different
Sarah Raynor: My feeling is, student frustration happens. They have to be led/pushed through it
Jan Hlavacek has joined this chat.
Kris Green: Sorry about this everyone...
Jan Hlavacek has left this chat.
Peggy Craft: Reference to listserve: for maple users or MVC teachers? we had one for HS teachers of MVC but it sort of died... not enough of us?
Susan Wildstrom: Actually there just wasn't a lot of traffic. We numbered more than 50.
Kris Green: I've also found MAPLE 11's file management to be clunky - it grinds away forever saving even the smallest files on my PC
3:30 PM
Sarah Raynor: The later part of the worksheet is just exercises, no more big animations coming
Jan Hlavacek has joined this chat.
Jan Hlavacek has left this chat.
Sarah Raynor: YOu're right, I'm spoiled because we have identical laptops
Sarah Raynor: for all students faculty and staff
Kris Green: Snack point?
Peggy Craft: FYI: vnc froze but OK on restart. (Your ITS people might be keeping records
Russell Blyth: thanks
Peggy Craft: Maybe we all skipped lunch to work on our worksheets...
Sarah Raynor: lol
3:35 PM
Jonathan Cox: Can you try inviting Jan Hlavacek? I've tried but it kicks him out.
Jan Hlavacek has joined this chat.
Russell Blyth: done
Jan Hlavacek has left this chat.
Russell Blyth: oops
Jan Hlavacek has joined this chat.
3:40 PM
Lyndell Kerley: You have to see the code for an understanding. Modules and procedures are utilized.
Steve Hennagin: nice job, kerleylm
Peggy Craft: I sure hope these projects are going to be graded on a curve
Sarah Raynor: me too, since our's crashed the teacher's computer
Steve Hennagin: if so, I will be taking the course over more than once
Susan Wildstrom: You can actually tell who has used Maple a lot and who the newbies are.
Steve Hennagin: I'm a newbie
3:45 PM
Mike May: PREP-MAPLE-2007@ENTERPRISE.MAA.ORG
Russell Blyth: http://www.maplesoft.com/academic/adoption/index.aspx
Peggy Craft: QT is breaking up, so please put this detail on the website somewhere please - ah: urls here are good, but again: on the page or listserve too please!
Russell Blyth: ok
Sarah Raynor: you can download the aim log from the webpage
Sarah Raynor: in case you forget something that was said in the chat
Susan Wildstrom: Last year they talked to me about a Maple Adoption plan. They are eager to please.
Steve Hennagin: Thanks for the good info
Peggy Craft: ah - I didn't know about aim logs - thanks!
3:50 PM
Russell Blyth: Another really nice link is http://www.maplesoft.com/applications/index.aspx the Maple application center
Peggy Craft: i like it like it is...
Rob Krueger: For some reason, the plot wouldn't work
3:55 PM
John Willemain: I was playing with this as well. If you use evalf in front of these, it will get rid of the RootOf values and look more like the previous answers.
David Schmitz has left this chat.
Kris Green: No problem
Sarah Raynor: why, you want to preserve the errors for posterity
Richard Wilders: Can you create packages of routnies to load? Like with(Plots) and so on?
Andrea Frazier: Can we see a list of projects that have been recieved but not posted yet?
Lyndell Kerley: Are these projects going to be available for download?
Kris Green: No problem
Peggy Craft: I want to learn how to recurse in maple. I can't sell maple over mathcad without it...
Susan Wildstrom: What does the transcript mean?
Lyndell Kerley: Mike,
Peggy Craft: Euler's method or newton's, yes.
4:00 PM
Russell Blyth: http://euler.slu.edu/GrantWebPages/PREP07Calc3Maple/transcripts.html
Susan Wildstrom: Thanks
Lyndell Kerley: Mike, I left the authors off odeWithComponentsAndModules.mw. I will send you the file with the authors indicated.
