How do I get the greater than sign > to show up in front of 1-D math commands?
insert/execution group
Thanks!
or control-J for touch-typists
9:55 AM
You may get smoother vnc at the "old" vnc sddress today
let us know how that works
that looks great!
artsciqt1.slu.edu:5901
it's working well for me

I've lost the old VNC addr - please resend

MAPLE
Andrea Frazier has joined this chat.
Lyndell Kerley has joined this chat.
have to use "shared connection"
Peggy, shall I call you right after class today?
Susan: that'll work
Rob Krueger needs an invite...
10:00 AM
thanks
anyone else?
Robert Krueger has joined this chat.
Russell: make the wings flap again so i can see if this new connection is working...
ah, ok: i'm good
I can't get the old address to work. It keeps giving me a "closed unexpectedly" message. Can you send me the new address. That was working fine earlier.
165.134.13.229:5901
I was getting the same thing. It worked when i went back to the numeric IP instead of the wordy one.
Jan Hlavacek has joined this chat.
Thanks,
Linda will not be here today
make sure you have "share connection" checked.
Sarah Raynor has joined this chat.
it will deny you if you do not explicitly share the connection from your side.
We have musical/magical presenters!
10:05 AM
music? magic?
But that delta did the job which is all that is required
you are right, sorry
10:10 AM
yes
i'm getting some refreshing but no graph
My VNC froze so I had to start
restart
The vakyes if 1 and -1 won't show up with that scale
oh. duh.
It would be nice to use spacecurve to show the paths on the surface as you approach the origin from different trajectories
so it has probably plotted
russell: are you doing anything? what should we be seeing?
You can use contour plot. If two contours with different colors meat at the same point, there is no limit
vnc 165.134.13.229:5901
Maybe you already talked about that, I just came in
I'm sorry -- I was ahead in the worksheet
I see the exercise and that you scrolled a bit
ok, i'm good
10:15 AM
I like your definition
students hate the square root and it is a huge headache
Why doesn't the graph give us the "hole"?
Look down the z-axis
10:20 AM
I meant on the next one...
yep
how do you change the colors to z, I missed the command?
In 2 space, you surrounded the point by a rectangle. In 3-space, why not surround the point with a box?
thanks
right-click works too -- my best friend in windowsland
By a box, a mean a small box around the point inside the boxed object.
10:25 AM
ah, this is great...
Nice!
10:35 AM
What is abs(1,h)?
Complex?
10:40 AM
piecewise function?
yes
OK
just indicating the derivative of |x|
yes
try plot(abs(1,x),x=-2..2); by itself
Yep, makes sense
10:50 AM
euclidean??
back on a previous line, normalize i think, it was the second argument... but I can look it up later...
(I'm getting lots of errors on my copy of this ws. And words are different. So i downloaded the latest on the program page: still errors. Someone AIM-file transfer the working one to me, like yesterday?)
I could transfer you my copy but I don't think it's working exactly like russell's either
my errors are about "unexpected options", so maybe it's a version issue?
Mine is fine. I took mine yesterday after class
are you sure you really executed the whole worksheet?
I'm not getting errors, the pictures just look different
yep, did the !!! thing!!!
10:55 AM
hmmm
no, the !!! did NOT help.
Sarah, how different are the pictures?
different arrow types
Peggy, let me try sending you the ws in a private chat
the 3d stuff looks the same, the 2d stuff was different
11:00 AM
Sarah, This sounds like an issue on platforms. At some point I would be interested in getting an export of the worksheet to see what it looks like on your platform.
this is begging to be animated !!
ideas for projects ...
I'm sending you my worksheet as a .pdf now
ok
email?
Mike: I love this! I have another way to explain the D-test, but this is great...
11:05 AM
Meg Onoda has left this chat.
Meg Onoda has joined this chat.
David and Meg - I got your emails, but can't open them. Can you AIM me?
the ws on the web page is not the same as the one you are using
thanks - this worksheet, or the vector one?
the current one on rotations
Yeah, i suspect M&R are making changes on the fly Maybe they just need to promise to load all of the newest versions by the end of the week... or next week...
Rich - How about I send a chat request right after the class.
OK
VNC frozen. will restart.
Rotations.mw, right?
It's at the program website
VNC dead
i've got the right worksheet
but vnc just died for me
can't reconnect vnc...
vnc died on me, too
vnc stuck
will relaunch vnc
David Schmitz has left this chat.
i'm back on. it's working
seems good now
ok now
I'm back now
11:10 AM
I learned rotations of axes it in HS also, and have taught it recently. Students found it very difficult (so did I when in HS)
we don't teach it at this HS...
mostly just in LA now, not calculus
Actually I do teach it when I don't run out of time. I have a handout that goes through all the bits or the rotation from a vector standpoin.
Mike: the ws that you sent me via AIM opened find in version 11
"find" = "fine"
11:15 AM
just like in measure theory?
joke := %;
I prefer arrow from plottools rather than plots package.
Does 'restart' clear memory, so there's no need to close/reopen Maple for cleanup purposes?
11:20 AM
There's a typo, I think; the original integral has upper limit 3, but all the commands use "highx = 2".
11:25 AM
Pedagogy question: when you use Maple like this, to demo something, do you have students execute along with you, like we're doing, or just watch, and then give them the ws later to play with?
Can you click on the sketch and use a menu to change the colors?
11:30 AM
russell i've sent you our project
Would you like us to to Edit -> Remove Output before we send so they're not huge?
