Russell Blyth: try restarting the qt app
Russell Blyth: no
Russell Blyth: eat lunch
Steve Hennagin: I see it all: vnc and QT
Russell Blyth: good
Peggy Craft: good I played with plotting. nice stuff
Kris Green: All good to go now
David Mazur has joined this chat.
Jan Hlavacek: I am ok now
Steve Hennagin: are you assigning people to groups?
Mike May has joined this chat.
Mike May: Hi there
Peggy Craft: There is a loud vacumn cleaner like hummmmmm
Jan Hlavacek: The same hum here
Natacha Fontes-Merz: yes, I hear that, too
Peggy Craft: nope
Steve Hennagin: hum persists with talking
Sarah Raynor: much better
Russell Blyth: we are killing vnc for a minute
Peggy Craft: it's better now... gone in fact
Jeff Abernathy: WARNING: Everyone VNC is about to drop again, please reconnect in a moment
Kris Green: VNC just died on me
Jeff Abernathy: VNC is now back up please reconnect
Russell Blyth: ok, better?
Steve Hennagin: looks good
Bret Taylor: All good here
Jen Roche: i can see it
Rob Krueger: Yep
2:35 PM
Sarah Raynor: vnc is live and seems somewhat better than before
Sarah Raynor: but still visibly slow
Peggy Craft: When plotting, and adding text,
Peggy Craft: I was disappointed that rescaling didn't move the text along with it. arghh. can the graph and comments be linked somehow?
Linda Gao has joined this chat.
Linda Gao: hi
Linda Gao: am I in?
Russell Blyth: yes
Russell Blyth: do you need urls?
Linda Gao: Great! Thanks!
Mike May: Linda, you are in
Linda Gao: yes
Jeff Abernathy: video is at rtsp://165.134.240.35/mvc070625pm.sdp
Linda Gao: well my video is working but vnc is not
2:40 PM
Phil Huling: video will be at mvc07YYMMDD and then either am or pm depending on the session
Phil Huling: whoops, mvcYYMMDD
Peggy Craft: tangent planes or local linearity?
Phil Huling: not the redundant 07
Mike May: tangent planes -
Mike May: a switch in order
Rob Krueger: yep, no update here
Phil Huling: Technical Difficulties....
Phil Huling: Please Stand By
Peggy Craft: so, time for irritating questions?
Mike May: vnc just kicked me off
Mike May: yes, let's gom to questions
Mike May: ticked me off
Mike May: imean
Russell Blyth: Questions are welcome
Peggy Craft: 1. Is there a way to get a document to re-execute the whole page, top down, when I change a variable at the top?
Steve Hennagin: technology is so wonderful
Mike May: yes
Russell Blyth: Does everyone have Maple running locally:
Sarah Raynor: there is an execute all button in the top menu
Linda Gao has left this chat.
Sarah Raynor: it looks like: !!!
Steve Hennagin: i am using 9.5
Natacha Fontes-Merz: yes, I have maple running
Sarah Raynor: yes
Sarah Raynor: (maple 10)
Jen Roche: yes, i have maple running
Kris Green: Maple up on second computer
Peggy Craft: ah ha: !!! how cute...
Jan Hlavacek: Did anybody get Matle 11 install on Linux, from the "windows" installer, I mean?
David Burton: Yes, but (and I sent an email to you with more details) I'm having major problems with 3-D plots
Kris Green: You canalso go "Edit/Execute/Worksheet" on the menu
Mike May: yes, that works
Steve Hennagin: i got it but it didn't want to install
Peggy Craft: got it... but i like the !!! better...
Rob Krueger: what is the difference between .mw and .mws
Mike May: you can also remove execution from that menu
Sarah Raynor: .mws is an older file type
2:45 PM
Peggy Craft: I have VNC running again but with the old "homework for Tuesday page" showing
Rob Krueger: When I go to file Save As, I get .mws
Sarah Raynor: you should be able to change to .mw in the file type option
Peggy Craft: VNC is refreshing... but old stuff still
Peggy Craft: hey ... new stuff. Unixy.
Rob Krueger: I can, thanks
Natacha Fontes-Merz: VNC is showing a first look at Tangent Planes
Peggy Craft: ah ha - i see your maple now!
Mike May: let's try to see if vnc will stay up
Sarah Raynor: i have vnc
2:50 PM
Steve Hennagin: tangent plane is red? surface is blue?
Mike May: looks to be
Kris Green: I have blue tangent planes and red surfaces...
Mike May: yes, the code says what kris sees
2:55 PM
Peggy Craft: AH... so putting those commands in one "block" with the shift-enter for new line but really one line, means one change DOES afffect the whole "program". good.
Kris Green: But the colors depend on which section you're in - the first section uses the colors reversed
Jan Hlavacek: Could the colors be made semi-transparent?
Mike May: yes
Peggy Craft: wireframe only is pretty nice
Steve Hennagin: are we going to another worksheet?
Russell Blyth: http://maplenet.slu.edu:8080/maplenet/worksheet/index.html
Mike May: maplenet.slu.edu:8080/maplenet/worksheet/index.html
3:00 PM
Steve Hennagin: I am at maplenet, how did you get where you are on vnc?
Jeff Abernathy: this link
Jeff Abernathy: http://maplenet.slu.edu:8080/maplenet/worksheet/EasyTangentPlanesComponents.mw
Peggy Craft: Firefox can't find that url...
Steve Hennagin: got it!
Mike May: port 8080 may be blocked
Kris Green: My browser needed to update some JAva stuff...
Steve Hennagin: I am using firefox on win
Sarah Raynor: I got that url on firefox, but the applet is still loading
Jeff Abernathy: yes, this is a java page, so there will need to be a relatively new version of java on your computer
Wasin So: what is maplenet?
Jeff Abernathy: http://www.maplesoft.com/products/maplenet/
Peggy Craft: firefox is happy now... our "websense" has been sniggly today
Wasin So: thankyou
Steve Hennagin: did it go to sleep? I pressed 'Update plot' and get nothing
Kris Green: Mine is all loaded, but when I click "UpdatePlot" nothing happens...for a long time
Richard Wilders: My java graph is not updating
Phil Huling: TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES AGAIN...
Sarah Raynor: mine is working ok
Mike May: vnc issues again ...
Richard Wilders: The maplenet I opened is not updating when I click update plot
3:05 PM
Sarah Raynor: Supposing we have a maple site license and students have access to computers with maple, is there an advantage to working with maplenet?
Kris Green: Mine started working after I refreshed the browser
Phil Huling: Our server is currently trying very hard. but not doing very well
Steve Hennagin: I quit with maplenet
Peggy Craft: Now I'm getting big letters: Maple worksheet - Error Failed to load worksheet... .mw
Jeff Abernathy: I f you are having problems with the maplenet worksheet
Jeff Abernathy: go ahead and reload it
Jeff Abernathy: with less people hitting it at the same time, it should work
Phil Huling: In theory...
Peggy Craft: yeah, reload, refresh, etc... no go. i'm going back to running my own maple
Joyce Quella: Having problems with VNC - I am going to get
Phil Huling: Please stand by... VNC will be restarting
Sarah Raynor: so, if teaching students to use maple is part of our calc curriculum, then there probably is not a huge motive to fiddle with maplenet?
David Burton has left this chat.
Joyce Quella: some tech support. Are you putting the notes on-line from today?
Mike May: the vnc issue is here, not there
Steve Hennagin: reloaded, pressed update, browser said 'done', and still nothing.
Peggy Craft: Question: should i understand "with(plots"? Makes me think of old Pascal code...
Mike May: yes
Mike May: the transcript from this morning is almost updated
Joyce Quella has left this chat.
Joyce Quella has joined this chat.
Peggy Craft: ok, so loading libraries is cool... but could I load them by default?
Sarah Raynor: it would probably help people who are not familiar with maple if you let them know what is a core plot command and what is coming from "plots"
3:10 PM
David Schmitz: Linda Gao needs another invitation to rejoin the chat.
Sarah Raynor: in this worksheet, I guess "spacecurve" is the command
Peggy Craft: "spacecurve"?
Jeff Abernathy: the VNC session is about to drop again. My apologies everyone, but you will need to reconnect, yet again.
Sarah Raynor: sorry, spacecurve is the command to plot a 3d parametric curve
Mike May: vnc down
Phil Huling: PLEASE STAND BY for VNC
Lakshmi Mukundan: I lost my VNC viewer
Mike May: vnc is down
Mike May: coming back up shortly
Peggy Craft: HEY - did you guys swap sides of the room or did we get a horizontal reflection in quicktime??
Phil Huling: VNC should be back up
Mike May: we apologize for the frustration
Rob Krueger: The whole state of Missouri reflects at noon each day.
Sarah Raynor: vnc is up
Peggy Craft: my VNC is back
Mike May: we're pretty puzzled and frustrated here
Sarah Raynor: i don't mind following along in maple myself if it will help us progress
Peggy Craft: In NC, flipping is illegal
Mike May: we switch sides to sit at the "instructor" machine
Steve Hennagin: there is very little reflection in Congress, mostly jumping to conclusions and running the opposition down. Exercise is good!
Peggy Craft: (thanks for the serious answer too ...)
Jeff Abernathy: cross your fingers VNC is going
Steve Hennagin: what are we seeing on vnc right now? a mws?
3:15 PM
Mike May: local linearity worksheet
Steve Hennagin: thank you
Peggy Craft: [I like your text in the LocalLinearity worksheet about analysis being the place where we study badly behaved function... ]
Peggy Craft: I'm seeing lots of red words and a few blue at the bottom, in a maple screen
Richard Wilders: I'm seeing the tangent planes worksheet
Steve Hennagin: v 9.5 doesn't show all of the mws. oh well
Mike May: People with last names A-H try a different vnc address
Peggy Craft: vnc down
Russell Blyth: Let's try something. People with last names a-H change servers for vnc to 165.134.13.231:5902
Mike May: Mike has the address here:
Mike May: password MAPLE
Jonathan Cox: Unable to connect to host
Kris Green: I'm live on 5902 with reasonable update times
Steve Hennagin: got it!!
Peggy Craft: unable to connect... timed out
Natacha Fontes-Merz: i'm in
Mike May: try again
Natacha Fontes-Merz: it's updating much faster
Jonathan Cox: Now it worked.
Peggy Craft: ah- my firewall might not let me try another one...
David Schmitz: please reinvite maplev9.
Steve Hennagin: much better response time
David Schmitz: Thanks
Peggy Craft: I went back to first - looks good
Wasin So: we are seeing your two well
3:20 PM
Mike May: as long as vnc is working better
Sarah Raynor: wow, way better
Mike May: anyone have slow vnc now?
Sarah Raynor: that's kind of a lie in 2d, isn't it?
Peggy Craft: so "del" is the granularity of the plot?
Sarah Raynor: many asymptotes are along a line
Peggy Craft: ah - got it now. sorry.
Sarah Raynor: eg ln(x+y)
Sarah Raynor: I just mean that we study lots of functions in multivariable calc whose singularities are not isolated
3:25 PM
David Mazur: yes, good point
Jonathan Cox: So "isolated" may not be the best word....
Jan Hlavacek: What is the other VNC server?
Sarah Raynor: I can live without vnc if it means it refreshes faster for others
Sarah Raynor: I am doing fine running the worksheet in parallel locally
Mike May: 165.134.13.231:5902
Mike May: same password: MAPLE
Rob Krueger: In Exercise 1, can you explain c and d?
Mike May: if the people A-M move to new VNC address
Mike May: we might be OK again
Mike May: something weird is going on
Mike May: 165.134.13.231:5902
Mike May: MAPLE
3:30 PM
Rob Krueger: Got it
Mike May: ok
Mike May: is it working any better for N-Z?
Bret Taylor: No refresh for VNC here...constant picture only
Jan Hlavacek: I am getting connection refused from the new address
Peggy Craft: Mike/Russell... move something on your screen so we know if VNC is working or not. I've seen no change for sometime now...
Mike May: all vnc is off
Phil Huling: VNC Please Stand By, we are trying to make the necessary changes
Mike May: will restart shortly with new address
Russell Blyth: Try VNC 165.134.13.231:5901
Mike May: for everyone
Russell Blyth: Please tell us how it works
Jan Hlavacek: vncviewer: ConnectToTcpAddr: connect: Connection refused
Unable to connect to VNC server
Natacha Fontes-Merz: i'm on
Mike May: had to close and reopen vnc
Mike May: note port number
Kris Green: I'm on, but static image
Mike May: 5901
Steve Hennagin: i'm on
Kris Green: okay, just changed
Sarah Raynor: i'm on and it is refreshing
Sarah Raynor: every couple of seconds or so
Jen Roche: okay here
Mike May: yes, but better than 10 sec or never
Mike May: we'll be working on this before the morning
3:35 PM
Peggy Craft: i'm on. can't tell yet about refresh. whoa - there we go "painter?"
Phil Huling: Everyone should now be on the new VNC address
Jan Hlavacek: I mave the old server working, the new address (both ports) refuse connection
Jeff Abernathy: ok both the new and old server should be running
Jeff Abernathy: the new number is preferred
Jeff Abernathy: so if you can use that great
Bret Taylor has left this chat.
Jeff Abernathy: if you can't get in there, but can get in on the old server, that fine also
Rob Krueger: VNC just died again. I am OK with following along in Maple
Phil Huling: which connection were you connected to?
Sarah Raynor: here too
Sarah Raynor: i've lost qt as well
Rob Krueger: NEW one
Mike May: anyone else?
Phil Huling: quicktime should be running, trying restarting QT if necessary
Steve Hennagin: ok here
Peggy Craft: say again which worksheet?
3:40 PM
Phil Huling: CatalogOfFunctions.mw
Peggy Craft: (I'm on a different machine - getting a crick in my neck going back and forth! thanks.)
Phil Huling: we are not liable for any chiropractic needs
Sarah Raynor has left this chat.
Jen Roche: What text do you use for these?
Joyce Quella has left this chat.
Joyce Quella has joined this chat.
Jen Roche: thanks!
Peggy Craft: oops... vnc showing weird stuff
Russell Blyth: weird stuff?
Peggy Craft: blue background, OSXvnc 1.71 grey box on top
Kris Green: ANyone having MAPLE problems besides me? This worksheet is really not behaving - lots of lag time and no responses...
Jan Hlavacek: No Maple!
3:45 PM
Costel Ionita: i have the lag time too
Peggy Craft: now 'vine server"
Jan Hlavacek: On the vnc screen
Peggy Craft: no maple on VNC screen
Jan Hlavacek: It's back
Russell Blyth: hold on
Jen Roche: i see maple on the vnc
Peggy Craft: ah - it's back.
Russell Blyth: ok
Russell Blyth: sorry
Russell Blyth: Implicit Plots
Mike May: FYI I got a response from Maple on people who have problems with installs. The reply is: Hi Mike, Please contact Technical Support at 800-267-6583 ext 413 or email atTechnicalSupport@maplesoft.com
Peggy Craft: i'm on original IP address... is that ok?
Steve Hennagin: is there something like a for statement in mapple?
Russell Blyth: ok
Peggy Craft: yep
Russell Blyth: yes
Peggy Craft: on maple 11, no "ball" shows - just the blue interpretation
Peggy Craft: maybe implicitplot3d not in this library?
Peggy Craft: did anyone see the "pool ball"?
Peggy Craft: I'm running your worksheet, so yeah, that's at the top/
Steve Hennagin: saw it all: been playing with it
Peggy Craft: "blue interpretation" meaning when I hit RETURn it read the red instructions, gave the blue works, but not graph.
Joyce Quella has left this chat.
John Willemain: If you reexecute everything, the implicitplot3d will work.
Peggy Craft: ah ha. that did it.
Jen Roche: yes, here!
3:50 PM
Peggy Craft: Thanks... I *thought* I hit return on that line. It would be nice to have some feedback on that, after the RETURN is hit...
Kris Green: My maple died...completely
Jen Roche: a=1, b=.5, c=.2
Jeff Abernathy: darthmath42, I'd recommed loading maple again
Kris Green: I'm trying, but the program won't even respond to close down. I'm trying to kill it thru the task manager, but unsuccessful
Jen Roche: oops
Wasin So: try a=1, b=2, c=3
Costel Ionita: american football or european (soccer)
Steve Hennagin: to Darth: use your light sabre to kill your machine, then your powers to reanimate it
Jen Roche: a=.4, b=.4, c=1
Jen Roche: that works better
Kris Green: So far, that seems to be working...you don't know the power of the dark side...or sacrificing chickens...
Sarah Raynor has joined this chat.
Peggy Craft: ??? Do you really mess with those angles instead of just clicking and dragging????
Rob Krueger: Does numpoints work in 3d?
3:55 PM
Phil Huling: the angles command is convenient so that it can be built into the code that the students would implement
Jan Hlavacek: I think making students mess with the angles could be a good exercise to get them used to the 3D plots
Peggy Craft: OK, but do you expect your students to use the angles? OK, I see for initial setup, but for looking around...
Kris Green: And the angles get them used to spherical coordinates...
Sarah Raynor: numpoints does work in 3d
Sarah Raynor: but you need huge numbers because it automatically distributes them evenly
Sarah Raynor: which can crash maple
Rob Krueger: OK
Steve Hennagin: I can hardly wait until Maple works successfully on my good computer (linux box)!
Steve Hennagin: This is great fun. Thank you all a bunch.
Peggy Craft: *** thanks for keeping a good attitude ***
Meg Onoda: thank you and see you tomorrow
Peggy Craft: For HW, do you just want that info for assignment in email?
Costel Ionita: see you tomorrow
Natacha Fontes-Merz: Thanks
Sarah Raynor: thanks
Kris Green: Bye for tonight (EDT)
Jan Hlavacek: raynorsg,, did you ever crash Maple? I never had a crash with 9.5, and I did some Huge calculations and complicated plots.
4:00 PM
Wasin So has left this chat.
Sarah Raynor: yes, it crashes about once per day when i am using it a lot
Jan Hlavacek: Which version of Maple do you use?
Steve Hennagin: bye
Sarah Raynor: my students routinely crash it
John Willemain has left this chat.
