Natacha Fontes-Merz: I keep losing it, too
Russell Blyth: is anyone doing fine with vnc?
Andrea Frazier: I think I am
David Mazur: I'm set
Jeff Abernathy: For those of you with resolution problems, I would suggest taking VNC out of full screen resolution and using only the left part of the screen, showing Maple, an disregarding the right side of the screen
Bret Taylor: Yes...appears so to me.
Costel Ionita: I am fine with VNC and QT
Meg Onoda: I lost it once but it seems working ok now
John Willemain: I'm okay. No problems yet.
Susan Wildstrom: I have VNC but have not tried to open QT since I got it back

Jen Roche: yes, I can hear some background noise
Costel Ionita: i can hear the laughter
Russell Blyth: yes
Andrea Frazier: There is background noise, but it's not awful
John Willemain: There is some noise, but I can hear you fine.
Natacha Fontes-Merz: yes, i can hear a little background noise
Susan Wildstrom: Yes, there's noise
Steve Hennagin: there is some noise, but I can adapt (maybe)
Kris Green: Background noise (laughter) easily heard
Rob Krueger has joined this chat.
Sarah Raynor: yes, but I can understand you
David Mazur: QT starts up, says switching, and disappears. "Apple QuickTime" remains in the bottom bar but there is no window! ?!?
Rob Krueger: I can't get the sound to hold on QT. I will log out of the chat and AIM and see if I can give all of the power to QT.
Rob Krueger has left this chat.
Russell Blyth: david, use open url in the file menu and then the video address
David Mazur: There is no QT window though!
David Mazur: It disappears
Steve Hennagin: I am using two computers: linux for IM and windows for QT. Mybe minnmathprof could use two machines also?

10:15 AM
Jeff Abernathy has left this chat.
Jeff Abernathy has joined this chat.
Peggy Craft: I have quicktime working, and VNC, and AIM, but no maple (quite yet).
Bret Taylor: Is it effective for single variable Calculus as well?
Lyndell Kerley: What are we doing now? I have a static VNC viewer open, but that is all. Quicktime produces nothing. do I go to file open and paste in URL or what?
Peggy Craft: So am I supposed to ask my questions here?
Russell Blyth: yes
Phil Huling: under quicktime you should go to file and then "open url"
Peggy Craft: Is Maple good for recursion, i.e. euler's method?
Sarah Raynor: I use maple even more for ode
Phil Huling: then the url is rtsp://165.134.240.35/mvc070625am.sdp
Bret Taylor: Thank you...
Susan Wildstrom: I assume that we are permitted to use and adapt all of these worksheets too.
Russell Blyth: yes
Russell Blyth: with a small tax
10:20 AM
Russell Blyth: send us your new materials, especially any associated paper worksheets
Steve Hennagin: Like the cook: you get "tasters"
Peggy Craft: We've been using MathCad for euler's method applications... and our Maple "expert" said Maple was not good for recursion, so I'll be exploring that (for SVC more than MV, but we do Newton's in both).
Lyndell Kerley: I am able to get in.
Sarah Raynor: i cannot get maple 11 running on my machine
Sarah Raynor: it keeps telling me it has an invalid license
Andrea Frazier: Sarah, we're having the same problems
Sarah Raynor: glad to know i'm not crazy
Jan Hlavacek: Is there a Linux version of Maple 11?
Jan Hlavacek: The link in the email we got was for Windows, not Linux
Linda Gao: Mike and Russell, Is it possible to use line-in sound?
Sarah Raynor: you teach every day with students having their computers active?
Russell Blyth: yes
Steve Hennagin: Linux version: yes, but the directions for installation are hard to follow. I have not been successful with fedora 6
Sarah Raynor: do you ever lecture with maple on the screen instead?
Sarah Raynor: the projector, that is
Susan Wildstrom: The worksheet is on the VNC, do I need to have Maple open with the WS there or is VNC enough
Sarah Raynor: yes, it is an infinite loop
Sarah Raynor: i enter the purchase code, it accepts it, and then it says maple must be restarted
Sarah Raynor: when i restart it repeats
Sarah Raynor: no it repeats every time
Sarah Raynor: i even reinstalled
10:25 AM
David Mazur has left this chat.
Jan Hlavacek: Steve, where did you get the Linux version?
Sarah Raynor: ok thanks
Steve Hennagin: off the 9.5 disk
Steve Hennagin: I mean dvd
Sarah Raynor: i have 10, as we discussed, so it is not an immediate crisis for me
Jan Hlavacek: I have that, but the Maple 11?
Jan Hlavacek: 9.5 does not read the new worksheets
Steve Hennagin: i tried the link from the email but the url failed.
Jan Hlavacek: I will try it
Sarah Raynor: you have to be copy with the email link, it is not all copied if you just click
Mike May: My e-mail is maymk@slu.edu
Sarah Raynor: you have to highlight and cut and paste
Costel Ionita: i have maple11 running on Ubuntu; it installed without any problems
Jan Hlavacek: Ok, so it should work with Debian. Did you use the "Windows" installer?
Costel Ionita: no I installed it from the dvd
Costel Ionita: i will try the "windows installer" tonight
10:30 AM
Rob Krueger has joined this chat.
Steve Hennagin: do I need to be seeing something other than russell?
Mike May: You should see the screen with vnc
Peggy Craft: VNC refreshes VERY SLOWLY so please slow down a bit...
Richard Wilders: F5 SHIFTS BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN 2D AND 1D INPUT
Bret Taylor: VNC is about 20-30 behind for me
Sarah Raynor: is there a need to use 2d input, or does 1d input work equally well?
Mike May: Given a choice maximize vnc to see our computer screen and minimize the quicktime window to hear.
Peggy Craft: ah. it's better when I go full screen on VNC, but now quicktime is cutting out. too much for my bandwidth maybe...
Andrea Frazier: Students like to look at 2d input, but they like to type 1-d
Susan Wildstrom: Is 1-d input actually the text input?
Peggy Craft: in 2D mode, is there a better way to "jump a level" than using the right-arrow key? seems awkward to me.
10:35 AM
Susan Wildstrom: I don't even find a 1-d option
Sarah Raynor: ctrl-m
Susan Wildstrom: Found it.
Susan Wildstrom: If you click on Text on the toolbar you get Maple Input too.
Steve Hennagin has left this chat.
10:40 AM
Jeff Abernathy: VNC may look funny for the next couple minutes
Russell Blyth: any questions?
Mike May: My number is 314-255-4293
Peggy Craft: I just tried sin(pi) and it didn't evaluate, but sqrt(16) did. Is trig different from other builtin functions? (Or am I moving too fast
Mike May: the constant is PI not pi
Andrea Frazier: capital P for Pi
Costel Ionita: Pi with capital P
Peggy Craft: ahha. thanks.
Peggy Craft: Is there a quick way to go from exact to approx mode (like on the TI89)?
Russell Blyth: evalf();
Russell Blyth: evaluate as a floating point number
Sarah Raynor: what system do you use for students to submit their work?
10:45 AM
Peggy Craft: we use Moodle; have used BlackBoard; Don't know if Maple will work with Maple or not. Anyone else?
Sarah Raynor: we use blackboard but it is quite kludgy
Sarah Raynor: i was wondering what other people use
Peggy Craft: (oops: make one of those maples be Moodle
Andrea Frazier: What is moodle?
Peggy Craft: a free blackboard-like product.
Peggy Craft: (oops - we can't chat without the teacher knowing ! more later)
Sarah Raynor:
Peggy Craft: thanks. but moodle story is a long one so let's hold it for later. I didn't get to play with plot yet.
Sarah Raynor: i don't think vnc is refreshing fast enough for us to see what you are doing
Jonathan Cox: I agree--I think it skips over some things
Sarah Raynor: i didn't see the scatter plot at all
10:50 AM
Peggy Craft: I've done right-click and see some stuff. Where are your working? from top-bar menu? (I can't see the whole screen at once...)
Sarah Raynor: i can't believe I never realized those menus were there
Sarah Raynor: i've been entering all of those commands by hand forever
Peggy Craft: ah -- i see them now...
Peggy Craft: Right click seems easier
David Mazur has joined this chat.
Susan Wildstrom: Where did those menus come from?
Russell Blyth: right click on the graph
Jan Hlavacek has left this chat.
10:55 AM
Jan Hlavacek has joined this chat.
Steve Hennagin went offline before accepting your invitation.
Peggy Craft: keep going - i'm good
Jan Hlavacek: Sorry, I accidentally closed my window
Richard Wilders: How do you enter the .. between the limits?
Sarah Raynor: two periods
Peggy Craft: Is there a way for ME to do a "local refresh" of my VNC?
Peggy Craft: (I see no graph at all right now...)
Mike May: We will work on the vnc refresh rate. This is a new problem for us.
Peggy Craft: Maple question (for a change: so it assumes the first named var is independent?
Russell Blyth: yes
11:00 AM
Jan Hlavacek: Is there a way to specify which curve gets which color?
Sarah Raynor: good question, because yellow is not visible on most projectors
Peggy Craft: OR: click on graph, right click, pick color
Sarah Raynor: cool, thanks
Peggy Craft: [For an after-the-fact, temporary fix)
Jan Hlavacek: thanks!
Andrea Frazier: Is there a way to put more colors on that list?
Peggy Craft: that click/right click menu also lets you change the line width
Sarah Raynor: you can also change the thickness in the plot command
11:05 AM
Richard Wilders: If yolu click on the curve and then right click it will let you change the color of that curve
Peggy Craft: cool... my programming students are going to love this tool...
Peggy Craft: (Another vnc question: can I make your screen fit into my screen so I don't keep having to pan updownleftright?
11:10 AM
Mike May: I think that is mainly a question of screen resolution.
Peggy Craft: ah - i''ll play with that later...
11:20 AM
Andrea Frazier: Is there a way to "hide" code...for example, if I'm writing a worksheet and want to show a graph with messy syntax, but don't want students distracted by that syntax?
Susan Wildstrom: In text mode you can do math without using the semicolon?
Peggy Craft: why are my equation references just numbers and yours are #.#?
Mike May: yes
Sarah Raynor: i'm running maple 10 and i have #.#
Peggy Craft: I've got maple 11 on a pc with xp
Sarah Raynor: I am wondering how you got reference numbers at all
Sarah Raynor: they don't appear by default, right?
Peggy Craft: no biggie. i'll look later.
Steve Hennagin has joined this chat.
Mike May: Maple 10 v Maple 11?
Jan Hlavacek: You have to have a section to get #.# style numbering
Mike May: yes
11:25 AM
Sarah Raynor: do you happen to know if these drawing features are tablet-compatible?
Peggy Craft: ah, sections - got it.
Peggy Craft: Big dumb question, probably because I wasn't listening earlier: what's the basic difference between a worksheet and a document ?
Sarah Raynor: ok, thanks
Sarah Raynor: cool
Sarah Raynor: if I get maple 11 installed, I'll play with it too
Sarah Raynor: so, is the document-mode a default option if you start a new file in maple 11?
Mike May: yes, you can set which you prefer in preferences
11:30 AM
Peggy Craft: Did Maple automatically recalculate everything below the change you made, or did yo uhave to force it?
Bret Taylor: Gentlemen,
Bret Taylor: I may be a bit late for the afternoon, will the VNC and QT addresses be the same?
Steve Hennagin: I hope to have Maple 11 on my Linux box
Peggy Craft: ok, thanks...
Phil Huling: the QT address will change to pm
Bret Taylor: Thank you
Steve Hennagin: Are these worksheets available to us?
Phil Huling: the numbers referring to YYMMDD
Jen Roche: on the website for the workshop they are
Steve Hennagin: Thank you very much!
David Mazur: Thanks!
Sarah Raynor: thanks
Costel Ionita: thank you
Peggy Craft: whew. this is quite a ride..
Mike May: ok, take care

Peggy Craft: How will we pick groups for group work? I think there are only two of us who teach high school, so maybe we should pair up?
Mike May: Peggy, that sounds like a good idea
Mike May: David, no
David Burton: Okay, I'll just be prepared for it next time.

Peggy Craft: "wild math lady"? sounds like a HS teacher to me!
Susan Wildstrom: That works for me. I have been teaching mv for about 10 years now.
David Schmitz has left this chat.
Peggy Craft: I just noticed some other HS teacher on the "who are we" website, but didn't note the name... maybe there are more than two of us!
Peggy Craft: I just thought we might have more in common than the college folks -- like more contact time, less responsible kids, etc...
11:40 AM
Peggy Craft: I've taught MVC for three years, but the school's taught it forever. I have the advantage of colleagues who also teach it. (We usually have two sections.)
Russell Blyth: will check to see if there's anyone else

Peggy Craft: ouch. 35?? I complain when i get up to 24!
Peggy Craft: Daughter's here to buy me lunch -- but good to meet you. Oh: other than "wild", what shall I call you? i'm peggy.
Susan Wildstrom: Susan Wildstrom
Peggy Craft: ah - great screen name then! The "contra" in my name is for my obsession with contra dancing. see ya later...
