Julianne Rainbolt: are you enjoying it? Julianne Rainbolt: it is Larry Gordon Williams: can't quite make it out Julianne Rainbolt: vnc: 165.134.13.231 Chirashree Bhattacharya: Good morning everyone. Julianne Rainbolt: russell turned on some music Chirashree Bhattacharya: have a GAP ques: how do I break out of a for loop? Gordon Williams: that's nice Gordon Williams: od; Gordon Williams: or ctrl-c Chirashree Bhattacharya: yes, prematurely Julianne Rainbolt: then the ctrl-c Chirashree Bhattacharya: no in a subroutine 10:00 AM Chirashree Bhattacharya: jen's sent you some subroutines by email Russell Blyth: use break Russell Blyth: look in vnc Russell Blyth: section 4.19 of the manual Russell Blyth: anyone not have video? Julianne Rainbolt: chiru - i checked our email we just got the subroutines Chirashree Bhattacharya: thanks Julianne Rainbolt: we will put the subroutines on the web with your project Tom Hoffman has joined this chat. Russell Blyth: repeating link Julianne Rainbolt: QT up:rtsp://165.134.240.35/GAP060714am1.sdp Daylene Zielinski has joined this chat. Julianne Rainbolt: vnc: 165.134.13.231 Julianne Rainbolt: QT up:rtsp://165.134.240.35/GAP060714am1.sdp Brian Walter: thank you Julianne Rainbolt: we are going to start with looking at some other software packages Daylene Zielinski: Is this freeware? Benjamin Collins: Yes, it is. I downloaded it this morning. Dennis Keeler: there was a warning about having all the groups load by default... takes a long time Dennis Keeler: I mean all the extra groups you can download Russell Blyth: http://groupexplorer.sourceforge.net/ 10:10 AM Anne Collins: ooh! pretty! Tom Hoffman: can you run it with cygwin? Julianne Rainbolt: not sure 10:15 AM Russell Blyth: http://modular.math.washington.edu/sage/ 10:20 AM Gordon Swain: Thanks Julianne Rainbolt: continuing Jen and Chiru project 10:25 AM Chirashree Bhattacharya: is there an easier way to write the group elements in terms of min gens? Jen Roche: there is a nicer subroutine for this now Gordon Williams has left this chat. Chirashree Bhattacharya: not for counting yet Jen Roche: not quite -we ran out of time for that Jen Roche: it in the works Jen Roche: thanks Julianne Rainbolt: jen and chiru - any other comments Julianne Rainbolt: ? Jen Roche: none from me Julianne Rainbolt: QT going Chirashree Bhattacharya: not really, will polish it and send it to you Julianne Rainbolt: back in QT in a minute Russell Blyth: Video off Julianne Rainbolt: we will start ben and tom project next Gordon Williams has joined this chat. Julianne Rainbolt: ok ben and tom? Daniel Shown: rtsp://165.134.240.35/GAP060714am2.sdp Russell Blyth: Video up Tom Hoffman: sure Gordon Williams: thanks Julianne Rainbolt: gordon are you ok? 10:30 AM Gordon Williams: yeah, had a minor system problem, decided to reboot Benjamin Collins: OK with me. Benjamin Collins: I want to be sure everyone knows that I did all the work on this one. Benjamin Collins: I came up with the idea and worked a couple of examples. Benjamin Collins: All Tom did was outline the project, write it up, find the proper GAP commands, and write the coding and decoding routines. Tom Hoffman: It took 2 minutes Tom Hoffman: they are at the end of the document also. Tom Hoffman: we discuss the idea of PowerMod in another class, but it could be a larger part of this project Tom Hoffman: most of our students don't remember it Dennis Keeler has left this chat. Dennis Keeler has joined this chat. Tom Hoffman: encode and decode are just to get the students past technical issues Tom Hoffman: no math involved 10:35 AM Tom Hoffman: yes, I do, but that is cheating Benjamin Collins: I do, too, but I had a head start. Benjamin Collins: Double encode it, once using my public key, and once using your private key. Tom Hoffman: Ben was faster Benjamin Collins: I double decode it, once using my private key, and once using your public key. 10:40 AM Benjamin Collins: Since you are the only one who knows your private key, it must have come from you. Tom Hoffman: this is just to change strings to numbers Benjamin Collins: I just noticed that you didn't encode an @ sign. Can't use this system to send an e-mail address. Tom Hoffman: I thought this might be helpful so the students are all using the same scheme Tom Hoffman: without mistakes Tom Hoffman: I will add @ in version 1.01 Tom Hoffman: There are large primes in the list Primes2, but getting primes from a list may not be very secure Tom Hoffman: NextPrimeInt in Gap 10:45 AM Benjamin Collins: What, you don't like Shakespeare? Benjamin Collins: What you're doing now is encryption, as opposed to encoding. 10:50 AM Benjamin Collins: Bear in mind that the project was my idea, so I'm allowed to ask the question. Tom Hoffman: I would hope to explore Fermat's little theorem and it's corollaries Benjamin Collins: I agree with Russell. That's actually why I covered it this past spring. Gordon Williams: and maybe the discrete log problem Tom Hoffman: I was also thinking it would be a fun class towards the end of the semester Benjamin Collins: Gallian has two problems with p = 37 and q = 73, which of course isn't secure at all, but is still hard to do on a hand calculator. Bill Abrams: freshman seminar with GAP, what an interesting idea. Tom Hoffman: Moral booster Bill Abrams: But Maple costs money. I can give my kids GAP. Bill Abrams: We are poor. Tom Hoffman: aren't we all? Dennis Keeler: FYI, if you use Maple in class, you can get a free copy and students can buy for $75. Dennis Keeler: http://www.maplesoft.com/academic/adoption/index.aspx Julianne Rainbolt: many of our students see maple in calc and/or linear algebra so it fits well to use this software in other courses where appropriate 10:55 AM Benjamin Collins: GAP question: If I used InputLogTo yesterday, how do I load and process that today? Julianne Rainbolt: use Read("filename"); Benjamin Collins: THX Julianne Rainbolt: tom and ben any more comments about your project? Tom Hoffman: nope Julianne Rainbolt: stopping QT Benjamin Collins: Thanks for doing all the work, Tom! Julianne Rainbolt: we are going to skip sections 15 - 17 Julianne Rainbolt: and start with section 18 Julianne Rainbolt: video up Daniel Shown: video up: rtsp://165.134.240.35/GAP060714am3.sdp Russell Blyth: any problems with QT or VNC/ Russell Blyth: ? 11:05 AM Russell Blyth: 18.1 now Russell Blyth: conjecture for 18.4? 11:10 AM Benjamin Collins: Rotation group of n-prism is isomorphic to D(n); Russell Blyth: the group of rotations of an n-prism is isomorphic to... Benjamin Collins: Can you tell I've been using GAP?; Russell Blyth: 18.6 11:15 AM Russell Blyth: 18.7 Benjamin Collins: I'm not sure you have a rotation in (1,10)(2,9).... Tom Hoffman: Have you thought about using this for interdisciplinary projects (chemistry or geology)? Benjamin Collins: Sorry, my mistake. Benjamin Collins: You're rotating differently than I did. Julianne Rainbolt: No, but that's a good idea, Tom 11:20 AM Benjamin Collins: D(2n); Russell Blyth: yes Benjamin Collins: So if it's not D8, what is it?; Dennis Keeler: It is D4 x C2 Dennis Keeler: Or as GAP calls it, D8 x C2 Julianne Rainbolt: Right Dennis Keeler: I think the general case may be Dn x C2 Dennis Keeler: If n is odd, Dn x C2 is iso to D(2n) (I think) 11:25 AM Tom Hoffman: off to class Tom Hoffman has left this chat. Gordon Williams: when are we up to present? Gordon Swain: These are for free use? or are some CopyRighted? Julianne Rainbolt: we do not have your materials yet? Gordon Williams: they are posted on the web Gordon Williams: and we'll post the link Julianne Rainbolt: after lunch: Gordon and Anne's projects, and sections 19-21 Gordon Williams: GAP Workshop 2006 11:30 AM Russell Blyth: Thanks! Gordon Williams: may post some more updates over lunch Russell Blyth: OK! Anne Collins: (worksheet's still a bit rough at the end) Julianne Rainbolt: ok anne Benjamin Collins: Thanks. Julianne Rainbolt: what is the link anne and gordon? Russell Blyth: Video down Daylene Zielinski has left this chat. Julianne Rainbolt: never mind russell has it Shaochen Yang has left this chat.
