Edward Moy: I am not getting QT.
Bill Abrams: I have AIM, VNC, and Quicktime. But it is still only Quicktime audio.
Julianne Rainbolt: Video will go down for a moment
Julianne Rainbolt: You'll need to quit QT and reopen. Address will be the same.
Tom Hoffman: I've got vnc and sound through QT but not video
Julianne Rainbolt: Up again. See if that helps
Julianne Rainbolt: Tom,
Julianne Rainbolt: try again
Julianne Rainbolt: Who does not have VNC?
Edward Moy: QT is now working.
Tom Hoffman: I have video now.
Shaochen Yang: I don't have QT.
Julianne Rainbolt: Close QT and reopen, Shaochen
Shaochen Yang: OK
Julianne Rainbolt: Just a reminder, "jrainbolt4" is Russell for now and "blythrd2" is Juli
Julianne Rainbolt: Anyone not have video now?
Russell Blyth: QT address:rtsp://165.134.240.35/GAP060710am1.sdp
Bill Abrams: I have audio and video on QT (for the moment).
Gordon Williams: There's an awful lot of background machine noise...
Russell Blyth: moving the mic - is it better
Russell Blyth: ?
10:05 AM
Gordon Williams: That's a bit better
Gordon Swain: I'm all set
Julianne Rainbolt: Anyone not set?
Shaochen Yang: I still don't have QT.
Brian Walter: i don't have video or audio now
Julianne Rainbolt: Brian, restart QT
Julianne Rainbolt: we restarted QT
Brian Walter: great - thanks (and sorry, i ran to the printer)
Julianne Rainbolt: OK!
Russell Blyth: any else having any problems?
Gordon Williams: I am now
Russell Blyth: we'll go ahead and start
Julianne Rainbolt: Gordon?
Gordon Williams: Lost the video feed
Julianne Rainbolt: Restart video
Gordon Williams: ok
Gordon Swain: video is bad, but I have sound
Gordon Williams: got it back
Russell Blyth: we'll start - let us know if you are having any problems!
10:10 AM
Russell Blyth: 314-605-1365
10:15 AM
Gordon Williams: would it be possible to get a list of people's chat addresses correlated to their participant names? I've got about 80% matched, but I'm missing a few
Gordon Williams: gordonianwilliams@mac.comis Gordon Williams
Daylene Zielinski: I'm daylene Zielinski atdzielinski@bellarmine.edu . (Scamp's my cat.)
Brian Walter: bwalter@evergreen.eduis Brian Walter
Gordon Williams: I think I've confused people, I meant your AIM chat address
10:20 AM
Julianne Rainbolt: To clarify: the "line" Juli is talking about is for our video archive. You can see more than that on the VNC feed.
Julianne Rainbolt: In the GAP download you have, you'll find a copy of all these materials in an "html
Julianne Rainbolt: " file
Julianne Rainbolt: soory for the break
Julianne Rainbolt: You can open the docs on your machine or put a copy on a local web server
Gordon Williams: The quicktime stream is dropping for me about once every 5 minutes, anyone else having that problem?
10:25 AM
Benjamin Collins: I haven't been able to open/print the file, once LoggedTo. Any suggestions?
Julianne Rainbolt: Daniel, can you pick up Gordon
Julianne Rainbolt: ?
Daylene Zielinski: Ben -- I just force it to open in Word. It looks fine.
Dennis Keeler: which platform are you using Benjamin?
Julianne Rainbolt: Ben: the file created has no type
Julianne Rainbolt: So you have to force it to open in a text editor or word processor
Julianne Rainbolt: Perhaps by dragging the file onto the App icon
Benjamin Collins: "Ben" is fine. I'm using Windows.
Julianne Rainbolt: I should have checked - would you prefer Benjamin?
Dennis Keeler: looks like Julianne answered the question. I was going to say open manually in Notepad. You might be able to right click on the file and say "Open with..." Notepad.
Julianne Rainbolt: If anyone has technical issues (like Gordon), please mention right away
10:30 AM
Julianne Rainbolt: Any part of the tutorial you like to see in more detail?
Anne Collins: my sound got really grainy for a while there, did i miss something? what am i supposed to be opening in word/notepad/??
Julianne Rainbolt: A LogTo file
Benjamin Collins: OK, that's working. Thanks, everyone.
Dennis Keeler: not exactly. But it would be nice to "compile" the tutorial with pdflatex or dvips, so you can select and copy text.
Dennis Keeler: The tutorial was done by OzTeX and I can't select & copy. It seems that the session worksheets were done with dvips, and I can select text.
Dennis Keeler: also noticed that Up Arrow works the same as ctrl-p.
Anne Collins: i'm still a bit behind, after messing with sound - LogTo doesn't seem to do anything?
Julianne Rainbolt: I can do something about the tutorial if that would help. The other files were translated from dvi to pdf using TexShop.
Tom Hoffman: Up arrow only works in some OS's/setups
Dennis Keeler: it is saving a plain text file somewhere on your hard drive
Dennis Keeler: but I don't know where that would be in Windows.
Russell Blyth: LogTo is saving a file that consists of any work any GAP that follows the LogTo command.
10:35 AM
Dennis Keeler: On Mac OS X, it saves the file in the directory you were at in Terminal before typing "gap"
Julianne Rainbolt: Dennis, we'll say something about the Windows locations later
Daylene Zielinski: My windows platform puts the file in the same folder that houses GAP.
Julianne Rainbolt: Yes.
Julianne Rainbolt: But you can have them go elsewhere.
Bill Abrams: QT is now gone. Did you all say that you were turning it off?
Gordon Swain: I've lost all sound
Chirashree Bhattacharya: Is it possible to get a printout/transcript of the chat?
Julianne Rainbolt: We'll do that next
Russell Blyth: yes we had to restart
Russell Blyth: sorry
Julianne Rainbolt: Restart QT
Daylene Zielinski: Same address?
Julianne Rainbolt: with address
Shaochen Yang has left this chat.
Julianne Rainbolt: rtsp://165.134.240.35/GAP060710am2.sdp
Dennis Keeler: yes, got video
Julianne Rainbolt: am2 instead of am1
Julianne Rainbolt: OK
Jen Roche: good here now
Benjamin Collins: OK, I'm in.
Julianne Rainbolt: OK
Brian Walter: i got video back
Bill Abrams: OK
Russell Blyth: any questions or problems?
Chirashree Bhattacharya: possible to save chat?
Julianne Rainbolt: we will have it on the web page
Chirashree Bhattacharya: ok thanks
Gordon Swain: I have sound
10:45 AM
Daylene Zielinski: Notepad puts the session on one line.
Daylene Zielinski: Word will put the line breaks in.
Anne Collins: i'm here!
Julianne Rainbolt: GAP thinks of permutations on the right
10:50 AM
Julianne Rainbolt: But other function notation is on the left
Chirashree Bhattacharya: I have no QT
Chirashree Bhattacharya: no audio/video
Julianne Rainbolt: Restart QT and see if it helps
10:55 AM
Dennis Keeler: so (2,3,4) means 2->3->4->2, just as in Gallian. So one must warn students not to reverse everything.
Julianne Rainbolt: Right.
Julianne Rainbolt: It's just the order of composition that is reversed
Gordon Williams: multiplication order here meaning a*b is do b then a right?
Julianne Rainbolt: No
Chirashree Bhattacharya: any way to get factorizations of ALL elements of K
Chirashree Bhattacharya: ?
Gordon Williams: do a then b?
Julianne Rainbolt: In GAP , a*b means do a first, then b
Julianne Rainbolt: In Gallian a*b means do b first then a
Julianne Rainbolt: for permutations
Julianne Rainbolt: Video is about up
Julianne Rainbolt: ...am3
Bill Abrams: Does anyone miss the old (x)f notation?
Gordon Williams: only every used that in one course in grad school, and hated every minute
Julianne Rainbolt: That's exactly what this is:
Tom Hoffman: Be careful with Factorization, it is work intensive. Probably should not be used on all elements of K.
Julianne Rainbolt: n sigma tau
Julianne Rainbolt: means apply sigma to n first, then tau
Julianne Rainbolt: Permutations
Brian Walter: how quaint!
Julianne Rainbolt: oops
Russell Blyth: QT:rtsp://165.134..240.35/GAPo60710am3.sdp
Julianne Rainbolt: Everyone have video again?
Jen Roche: yes here
Julianne Rainbolt: too many dots
Russell Blyth: sorry about the two dots in QT address
Julianne Rainbolt: also an o instead of a 0
Julianne Rainbolt: everyone up again?
Daniel Shown: rtsp://165.134.240.35/GAP060710am3.sdp
11:00 AM
Brian Walter: got it
Chirashree Bhattacharya: no, my QT seems to be corrupted
Chirashree Bhattacharya has left this chat.
Julianne Rainbolt: Tom made a good point. Factorization is really only good for small groups.
11:05 AM
Chirashree Bhattacharya has joined this chat.
Chirashree Bhattacharya: session 3?
Julianne Rainbolt: yes
Julianne Rainbolt: am3
Chirashree Bhattacharya: I'm good, thx daniel
Julianne Rainbolt: Great!
Daylene Zielinski: My audio is dropping out a lot.
Benjamin Collins: D -- it's OK here, so it's a local problem. Restart QT?
Julianne Rainbolt: we seem to be OK here on audio
Julianne Rainbolt: But: once in a while one of our battery packs on the remote mic will run out and everyone will lose audio
Julianne Rainbolt: Let us know right away!
11:10 AM
Daylene Zielinski: OK, I'm up again.
Julianne Rainbolt: good
Chirashree Bhattacharya: yes, call me chiru
Chirashree Bhattacharya: yes
Shaochen Yang has joined this chat.
Julianne Rainbolt: Hi Shaochen
Julianne Rainbolt: The video address is
Tom Hoffman: Chiru--to modify the function on page 3 just mentioned, you could replace "Filtered" by "List"
Chirashree Bhattacharya: ok
Julianne Rainbolt: rtsp://165.134.240.35/GAP060710am3.sdp
Daniel Shown: Shaochen, video is at rtsp://165.134.240.35/GAP060710am3.sdp
11:15 AM
Julianne Rainbolt: We'll see List in other settings later
Julianne Rainbolt: Video stopping
Julianne Rainbolt: will be ...am4
Julianne Rainbolt: i.e.
Julianne Rainbolt: rtsp://165.134.240.35/GAP060710am4.sdp
Julianne Rainbolt: video is up now
Julianne Rainbolt: Any issues?
Dennis Keeler: perhaps we will hit this later, but after the tutorial, was wondering...
Tom Hoffman: Will we be finisihing this session in the next 10 min?
Dennis Keeler: how to make a subgroup like { x^2 : x \in G} (where G is abelian, say);
Julianne Rainbolt: Tom, prob not
Dennis Keeler: yeah, tried to just fiddle with the "Filtered" construct, but don't know it well enough
Dennis Keeler: sure
Tom Hoffman: You could square all the elements and use them as generators in a subgroup command (brute force)
Julianne Rainbolt: Right, that's what I was thinking
Julianne Rainbolt: Would be OK for "small" groups
Gordon Williams: is there a way to use the result of the last computation, e.g. in mathematica %^2 means square the last result
Tom Hoffman: use the command last
11:20 AM
Tom Hoffman: like last^2
Gordon Williams: thanks
Julianne Rainbolt: there's also last2 and last3 for the previous results
Russell Blyth: answer to 1.6?
11:25 AM
Daylene Zielinski: Group order/# of elements of that cycle structure = Centralizer Order
Gordon Swain: order of centralizer times the number of elements with that cycle type equals order of group
Daylene Zielinski: Oops!
Dennis Keeler: Thm 7.3 of Gallian: Orbit-Stablizer Theorem
Julianne Rainbolt: Right, although this exercise would be before Ch 7
Tom Hoffman has left this chat.
Edward Moy has left this chat.
Julianne Rainbolt: Any observations on the morning session?
11:30 AM
Daylene Zielinski: Started Slow, but pace felt right in the last 45 minutes.
Daylene Zielinski: Of course.
Gordon Williams: listserv?
Gordon Swain: I thoought the pace was good.
Gordon Williams: cool
Jen Roche: I like the pace so far
Daylene Zielinski: Can we start the afternoon session with a quick tour of where these transcripts and listserv can be accesses?
Dennis Keeler: sometime this week, I'd like to see actual STUDENT worksheets, with how long the students have to do the work.
Dennis Keeler: I am still bad at judging how much work a normal student can do.
Benjamin Collins: I'm still waiting to meet a "normal student".
Dennis Keeler:
Daylene Zielinski: I don't have any normal strudents
Dennis Keeler: well, someone who probably isn't going to get a PhD in math. I have too much fun with these kind of exercises.
Gordon Swain: On the handouts, does ab mean to do the product in the same way GAP does? Or the reverse way that we usually teach?
Dennis Keeler has left this chat.
11:35 AM
Chirashree Bhattacharya: we'll start with am5?
Russell Blyth: it will start with pm1
Chirashree Bhattacharya: sorry stupid ques
Julianne Rainbolt: Thanks everyone
Chirashree Bhattacharya has left this chat.
Gordon Williams has left this chat.
Benjamin Collins: Thank you.
Julianne Rainbolt: Video is off
Daylene Zielinski: Bye all.
Julianne Rainbolt: Bye!
