Exploring Linear Algebra with Maple

A PREP Workshop

AIM log - Wednesday June 29, 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

2:25 PM
Mike May: hi
Russell Blyth: I'm in
Christian Hellings: MatchettB needs another invite...
Mike May: yes, I have
Steve Prothero: VNC doesn't seem to be available
Mike May: vnc is up now
Lynne Doty has joined this chat.
Lynne Doty: thanks
Steve Prothero: Good, got it now.
Dennis Keeler: what software do you use to broadcast the QT stream?
Parviz Khalili: Evrything looks fine.
Mike May: Quicktime Broadcaster sends the video to our Apple Xserve which
then sebds it out using Quicktime Streaming Server
Dennis Keeler: just wondering if my students would like virtual office hours.
THey don't like to hike to the math building.
Dennis Keeler: ah, not freeware.
2:30 PM
Mike May: the server is not free
Leah Wrenn Berman has joined this chat.
Marius Buliga has joined this chat.
Mike May: VNC server is free
Regina Souza: still no sound
Lynne Doty: no sound here either
Christian Hellings: Is there a free-drawing white board facility just within
AIM? I thought Yahoo Messenger had that.
Mike May: anyone else on sound?
Joyce Quella: You might be able to do it with TabletPCs
Suzanne Riehl: I can hear you fine
Hugh Sanders: I have sound.
John Boncek: believe it or not, I have sound!
Lynne Doty: okay, I restart
Dennis Keeler: thanks. I'll have to play with VNC server.
Daniel Shown has joined this chat.
Steve Prothero: My sound is fine, but in the past I've had to recycle to get it
back after it's gone away.
Lynne Doty: I'm good on sound now.
Tepper Gill has joined this chat.
2:35 PM
Tepper Gill: thanks
Mike May: video address is as expected pm1
Regina Souza: got sound now
David Thomas: Are the three fills sent in the afternoon e-mail zipped?
Michael Siddoway has joined this chat.
Mike May: They shouldn't be - but that seems to be a puzzle. Go to the web
site to get them if there's an issue.
2:40 PM
John Boncek: All these features are nice....but I'm getting the feeling that the
"new Maple" is getting to be unwieldy.
Mike May: http://euler.slu.edu/PREP05/program.html
Frank Rooney has joined this chat.
Leah Wrenn Berman: Do you knwo if there's a way to force the table
entries to *not* be in math mode?
2:45 PM
Leah Wrenn Berman: We tried selecting and making it text but that
didn't seem to work
Mike May: Frank - are in the chat?
Mike May: are you in?
Harry Mills: Mike, Leah: I think you can move back 'n' forth simply by clicking
on the Text/Math buttons in the top left.
Lynne Doty: Leah, I figured it out-I think. Make it text before you type the
number.
Harry Mills: You click on math, and it evaluates upon "Enter"ing.
2:50 PM
Harry Mills: Yes. Click the Text or Math buttons before typing and Maple will
respect your choice of mode.
Leah Wrenn Berman: too bad you don't get to change your mind
after you've typed
Harry Mills: That's when in document mode. Nice. This was just what Regina
wanted.
Mike May: video off
Mike May: will be pm2
Mike May: back
Mike May: all OK?
Regina Souza: Can one insert something in document mode within a
worksheet?
Regina Souza: dont answer now I still don't have sound
Regina Souza: ok
Mike May: try it ... yes, you should be able to ... mike is trying now
2:55 PM
Regina Souza: thanks - Time for me to do some hw!
3:00 PM
Leah Wrenn Berman: If you have already typed a bunch of stuff,
how can you insert sections that section up your already-typed text
(without cutting and pasting)?
Parviz Khalili: How do we get math symbols typed into our text?
Harry Mills: Using the palette works. I don't like the mouse-dependent
ergonomic, e.g., in TeX, \alpha does it.
Parviz Khalili: Thanks that is nice
John Boncek: I was having trouble typing || x ||^2 (norm of a vector squared)
when I was playing with this earlier.
3:05 PM
Harry Mills: I doubt it'll get to TeX capabilities unless people want to compile. I
don't think such a feature would be cost-effective.
Christian Hellings: I become hugely dependent on word completion.
Christian Hellings: Ctrl-SPACE does it (on a PC keyboard anyway)
3:10 PM
Leah Wrenn Berman: Can you talk about inserting sections into
already-written text?
Leah Wrenn Berman: lovely---thanks!
Mike May: video will go down
3:15 PM
Russell Blyth: video up
Russell Blyth: pm3
Christian Hellings: Can you invite Dorothy Zeiser to the chat?
Dorothy Zeiser has joined this chat.
3:20 PM
Derrick Head: What's the purpose of interface(showassumed=0):
Derrick Head: That's fine Thanks
3:25 PM
Mike May: I checked, interfacec(showassumed=0) hides tildes that Maple will
put on variables with assumptions.
John Boncek: That's good to know. Those tildes are annoying
3:35 PM
Harry Mills: I believe some of these approximations were used before the
function space theory was developed to justify their use. Weren't Fourier series
an instance of this *memory failing*
Mike May: HM, You are correct. The theory was developed to unite several
different processes.
Mike May: HM, The theory also explains why several techniques emerged.
They had nice properties, like not needing to start over with better
approximations.
Russell Blyth: pm 4 is up
Mike May: rtsp://165.134.240.35/LA050629pm4.sdp
3:40 PM
Leah Wrenn Berman: if you like...MmaTranslator[Mma][Chop] -
replace approximate real numbers close to zero with the integer 0
3:45 PM
Regina Souza: do you have a worksheet for exponential of matrices? I
suppose Maple is able to compute it directly too...
Regina Souza: good
Leah Wrenn Berman: the obvious code works fine
Leah Wrenn Berman: A^(1000)
Regina Souza: i meant using diagonalization - as he used it for powers...
Leah Wrenn Berman: oh, sorry
3:50 PM
Regina Souza: that's really handy to write tests and quizzes, I suppose
Michael Siddoway: Can you substitute the matrix into its characteristic
polynomial?
3:55 PM
Harry Mills: Hmmmm. You SHOULD be able to. Not sure if Maple expects it to
be atomic or not.
Michael Siddoway: Is there a way to take products of matrices with 1's and
a's and have the entries appear as nice polynomials in a?
Lynne Doty: Question: I know you mentioned this earlier, but what is the
significance of the black bracket on left of block of text, What does it designate?
Harry Mills: WARNING: Two kinds of "arrow": plots package version and
plottools package version.
Regina Souza: I'm still struggling with the basics. I sent you a small question
by email
4:00 PM
Steve Prothero: I have Maple 10 for this workshop, but the school has 9.5. Is
there going to be much trouble running the worksheets you've supplied on 9.5?
Harry Mills: I responded, Regina. plottools package version requires 5
arguments. You sent it 4.
Harry Mills: Trying to mollify us, now, after that crack about people running on
too little sleep? heh.
Regina Souza: and 6 or 8 that know the answer too (which makes it nice, one
doesn't have to struggle alone)
Michael Siddoway: Will they run on 9.5?
John Boncek: i've noted : maple 10 loads the worksheets you did in older
versions very slowly (the conversion routine is very slow)
Regina Souza: please get closer to the microphone...
Harry Mills: yes, Jack. And forget about keeping any equation editor
embeddings you may've used in v9 or v9.5.
John Boncek: even worse -- i have maple 8!
Harry Mills: I'd like to work more on this right now, but I have a work party of
volunteers coming to my house in the next half-hour.
Frank Rooney has left this chat.
John Boncek: I've lost audio again....network congestion on our campus.
David Thomas has left this chat.
Harry Mills: I will work on this more this evening. I have something roughed-
out that ain't pretty. I'll mail it to you tomorrow, Mike.
Mike May: JB - Maple 8 will be fine
Harry Mills: Jack: v8 will handle the embeddings. it's the later versions that
don't.
Steve Prothero: so long until tomorrow
Suzanne Riehl has left this chat.
David Huckaby has left this chat.
Leah Wrenn Berman has left this chat.
Regina Souza: ok - bye
Harry Mills: With the palettes and such, you're better off w/o the embeddings,
which you have to manually re-size.
Harry Mills: *Bye*
Steve Prothero has left this chat.
Dorothy Zeiser: thanks
Dennis Keeler: bye, thanks.
Parviz Khalili: bye
