Exploring Abstract Algebra Using Computer
Software
A PREP Workshop
Software
Descriptions of the Software
GAP
GAP (Groups, Algorithms and Programming) is a free system for computational
discrete algebra. It is the software of primary interest in this
workshop.

-
Home page for GAP, includes information
about GAP, how to get GAP, contacts for GAP support, and other information.
AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)
AIM was used to communicate with participants and for participants to communicate
with the workshop leaders.

VNC
VNC was used to share our computer screen with remote users. Participants
were able to see the GAP input and output as it occurs on the workshop
leaders' computer. Instructions for connecting to the VNC server were provided
to participants via email and/or AIM.
Links for VNC clients
-
Download RealVNC, a
VNC client for Windows (RealVNC seems to work more reliably than TightVNC
for Windows)
-
Download TightVNC,
a VNC client for Windows and Unix/Linux
-
Download VNCThing, a VNC client for
Macintosh (or download from this alternate
site if necessary)
Streaming Video and Audio
Streaming Video and Audio were provided via Quicktime Streaming of an MPEG-4
video stream. This allowed participants to hear and see the workshop leaders.

Download Quicktime
Player for Windows or Macintosh
-
Unix/Linux users can use MPlayer, a part of many standard distributions.
MPlayer may need to be recompiled with additional components installed
first to permit the viewing of rtsp files.
