Exploring Abstract Algebra with Computer Software

A PREP Workshop

AIM log - Monday June 28, 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Janet Mills: Is anyone else having a problem with lengthy
printing
times? I am on a network printer, and it doesn't seem to
matter what
printer I print to, it takes a couple minutes a page, or
more.
Russell Blyth: pdf files sometimes take a while to print
Russell Blyth: I noticed it was taking about 30 seconds per
page on one
of our printers
Nikolaus Vonessen: PDF-files normally print fast. The
handout pdf files
print extremely slow.
Janet Mills: It has taken me an hour to print these, and I
am not
finished yet.
Russell Blyth: Wow!
2:25 PM
Joanne Redden: Wow. It was a little slow here. But not that
slow.
Kathryn Weld: I had no trouble.
Donna Nonnenkamp: Print from the icon on the menu bar not
from file
print when you are printing from acrobat reader. It will
make it faster
Steve Hennagin: The pdf file with the figures for exercise 1
had many
blank pages.
Russell Blyth: We can go ahead with Quicktime
Russell Blyth: The URL is
Steve Hennagin: I ended up cancelling the print job and
starting over\
Russell Blyth: Print those landscape
Nora Strasser: What's the URL for quicktime?
Donna Nonnenkamp: rtsp://165.134.240.35/video0628pm1.sdp
Russell Blyth: VNC - same as this morning
Russell Blyth: 165.134.131.41
Donna Nonnenkamp: 165.134.131.41
Russell Blyth: The pdf files are created by diverting a
print job from
OzTex to a pdf file within OS X. It may be that it is not
done very
efficiently. Certainly the files created are large.
Russell Blyth: How is everyone doing? Any problems?
Kathryn Weld: no.
Joanne Redden: So far so good. All up and running.
Madeleine Gregoire: Doing fine.
Nora Strasser: Everythings OK
Donna Nonnenkamp: Kathy Do you need some help?
Janet Mills: I am on.
Robert Quinn: everything is good
Kathryn Weld: I am fine!
Blake Boursaw: good here
Donna Nonnenkamp: Good
John Vogt: ok
Nikolaus Vonessen: My guess is that the pdf files consist of
large
images.
Richard Wagner: I'm ok
Donna Nonnenkamp: Good
Steve Hennagin: I am logged in!
2:30 PM
Russell Blyth: Any questions?
Robert Quinn: Is GAP like Matlab where you can write
commands in a
file and then execute?
Maria Fung has joined this chat.
Donna Nonnenkamp: Maria hi
Russell Blyth: Yes, we'll see an example
Donna Nonnenkamp: rtsp://165.134.240.35/video0628pm1.sdp
Russell Blyth: for QT
Robert Quinn: ok, thanks
Russell Blyth: and for VNC:
Donna Nonnenkamp: for vnc use 165.134.131.41
Russell Blyth: Maria, OK?
Maria Fung has left this chat.
Maria Fung has joined this chat.
Maria Fung: I am OK!
Donna Nonnenkamp: Good
2:35 PM
Susan Pustejovsky has joined this chat.
Susan Pustejovsky: hello
Donna Nonnenkamp: Hi Susan
Maria Fung has left this chat.
Russell Blyth: hi susan we have already started - welcome
back
Steve Hennagin: i dowmloaded everything but did not get the
cube
Donna Nonnenkamp: rtsp://165.134.240.35/video0628pm1.sdp
Maria Fung has joined this chat.
Maria Fung: Back!
Donna Nonnenkamp: Susan the IP for vnc is the same as this
morning
Donna Nonnenkamp: 165.134.131.41
Susan Pustejovsky: ok I'm ready
Donna Nonnenkamp: good
2:40 PM
Juli Rainbolt: Any Qs
2:50 PM
Blake Boursaw: Is there a (non-pedagogic) reason for
inputting these
groups as subgroups of the permutation group instead of just
directly?
Michael Engquist: What is an example of an "unfaithful"
representation?
Blake Boursaw: Yes
Steve Hennagin: how can you be sure that 2 and 3 can be
switched
leaving 1 and 3 alone?
Steve Hennagin: Your picture doesn't look like that
Michael Engquist: thanks
2:55 PM
Steve Hennagin: thanks
Blake Boursaw: So when I ran the IsomorphismGroups command
twice,
I got different isomorphisms. Is this unusual for GAP?
Juli Rainbolt: No
3:00 PM
Maria Fung: I lost the sound...
Joanne Redden: I'm still good.
Donna Nonnenkamp: Maria - close out quicktime and restart
Donna Nonnenkamp: It should come back
Maria Fung: OK!
Maria Fung: OK!
Donna Nonnenkamp: Maria is it working ok now- can you hear
Russell?
3:05 PM
Blake Boursaw: OK, I'm not getting GAP to Read in the
orderFrequency
file. I've saved it as a text document in the gap4r4 folder.
Any hints?
Nikolaus Vonessen: I use Windows 2000. I have to issue the
command
Read("c:/gap4r4/orderFrequency");
Nikolaus Vonessen: Note the slashes not backslashes.
Kathryn Weld: I cant find the orderFrequency file on the
workshop web
site-??
3:10 PM
Russell Blyth: russell is going to show you where the file
is on his
computer screen
Russell Blyth: ok kathy?
Maria Fung: OK now. I had to reboot QuickTime again.
Nora Strasser: Thanks for the hint, but I still can't seem
to read in the
file.
Kathryn Weld: Yes, Thanks-
Maria Fung: I cannot find the Order Frequency either...
Blake Boursaw: Yes, I'm still not able to read in the
orderFrequency file
either...
Russell Blyth: The next section we are going to create some
functions
and then read them in - this may help you see how to load in
orderFrequency
Kathryn Weld: I found the file and saved it, but cant read
it in.
3:15 PM
Maria Fung: Where do we save it and as a what file do I save
it?
Russell Blyth: marie - save it in the gap4r4 folder
Steve Hennagin: when you say 'look here', i don't see where
you are
pointing
Nikolaus Vonessen: I used netscape to download the file
orderFrequency, and netscape wanted to save it as
orderFrequency.txt.
Maria Fung: OK.
Russell Blyth: steve - see were highlighting
Steve Hennagin: highlight helps, thank you
Maria Fung: After you save it, how do you upload it to GAP?
Russell Blyth: maria - type Read("orderFrequency");
Kathryn Weld: I have saved it in the Gap folder as a text
file, but Gap
says it doesnt exist or is not readable.
Juli Rainbolt: Read("c:/gap4r4/orderFrequency");
Nora Strasser: I tried that too and it didn't work.
Steve Hennagin: go to a dos prompt and look for it. you may
need to
move it to the c: directory
Kathryn Weld: It didnt work for me either.
3:20 PM
Russell Blyth: QT is up again
Russell Blyth: new URL
Nikolaus Vonessen: If you saved the file as a text file
under windows,
you might have created a file witht he extension ".txt"
Donna Nonnenkamp: rtsp://165.134.240.35/video0628pm2.sdp
Donna Nonnenkamp: pm2 instead of pm1 is the only change
Donna Nonnenkamp: You should see Juli now
Russell Blyth: May need to close QT and open again
Steve Hennagin: ik'm up
Donna Nonnenkamp: File open url in new player
Donna Nonnenkamp: rtsp://165.134.240.35/video0628pm2.sdp
Russell Blyth: Any problems?
Russell Blyth: with QT
Joanne Redden: No.
Nora Strasser: I lost sound
Kathryn Weld: I have verified that my file is in the correct
folder
Gap4r4, and it is listed as a .txt file
Donna Nonnenkamp: anyone else lose sound
Joanne Redden: I have sound.
Maria Fung: I have sound... but order frequency is still not
working...
Nora Strasser: I'm Ok. now
Russell Blyth: Good
Donna Nonnenkamp: Appendix to section 2
Kathryn Weld: I lost everything, closed QT and nbow cant
open it...
Nikolaus Vonessen: Kathryn: rename the file
oderFrequency.txt to the
new name orderFrequency
Donna Nonnenkamp: Kathy try to file open url in new player
Donna Nonnenkamp: then type in the URL do not click on the
link
Blake Boursaw: OK, I saved order frequency in gap4r4/bin and
read it
in as with Read("C:/gap4r4/bin/orderFrequency.txt"); and it
worked
finally! (the bin folder is where my GAP executable is in
Windows).
Kathryn Weld: I dont understand how to rename my file w/o
any
extension.
Michael Engquist: my quicktime is not working
Kathryn Weld: Can you send me the URL agin?
3:25 PM
Donna Nonnenkamp: Michael please close out quicktime quit
and then
restart it again
Kathryn Weld: I have tried that 4 times.
Donna Nonnenkamp: It should save the url
Donna Nonnenkamp: rtsp://165.134.240.35/video0628pm2.sdp
Kathryn Weld: It saves the URL, but when I try to connect,
It says its
"Not Found"
Donna Nonnenkamp: from when you entered it before
Michael Engquist: I am having trouble with quicktime.
Donna Nonnenkamp: Double check to make sure it is ok and
then
press ok
Russell Blyth: The URL changed slightly
Kathryn Weld: OK, Got it!
Russell Blyth: pm2
Russell Blyth: not pm1
Michael Engquist has left this chat.
Michael Engquist has joined this chat.
Donna Nonnenkamp: Hi Michael
Michael Engquist: Hi
Russell Blyth: OK, if QT is completely closed, try again
with the new
URL
Donna Nonnenkamp: rtsp://165.134.240.35/video0628pm2.sdp
Russell Blyth: ...pm2.sdp
Kathryn Weld: I have lost sound agin. Will try to restart.
Kathryn Weld: I'm in.
Russell Blyth: OK!
3:30 PM
Nikolaus Vonessen: Well, it created my file on the desktop
(under
Windows 2000).
Maria Fung: Which subfolder do you look in on a PC?
Russell Blyth: It is *supposed* to be in the folder gap4r4
Russell Blyth: But it sounds like that's not always the
case!
Maria Fung: But the folder has 12 subfolders... is it
supposed to be in
one of those?
Russell Blyth: no
Russell Blyth: Just inside gap4r4
Maria Fung: I cannot find it... I do see the OrderFrequency
file but it is a
txt file... is this OK?
Donna Nonnenkamp: c:/gap4r4/orderFrequency
Russell Blyth: You may need to rename without the .txt
3:35 PM
Nikolaus Vonessen: It works for me to type
InputLogTo("c:/gap4r4/
test") to log to the file "test" in the directory c:\gap4r4
Janet Mills has left this chat.
Kathryn Weld: Juli-
Russell Blyth: OK, Nikolaus, that seems to be a good idea
Kathryn Weld: Can you adjust your window? I cant see all of
Gap.
Russell Blyth: You should be able to scroll your VNC window
Russell Blyth: Like now, scroll up!
Nora Strasser: My file was stored in gap4r4\bin
Russell Blyth: OK, Nora, can you Read the file successfully?
Kathryn Weld: I am missing the left side of the Gap input no
matter
how I adjust.
Steve Hennagin: try the function even with the error message
in the file
and see what happens
Maria Fung: THANK YOU!! It is in Bin for me too... Phew!
Russell Blyth: Try moving your cursor on the VNC screen to
the left, it
my make the wondow move that way
Russell Blyth: (It does on mine)
Donna Nonnenkamp: Kathy -try to minimize your window so it
is a
smaller size and then see if you can see the left
Janet Mills has joined this chat.
Donna Nonnenkamp: Hi Janet
Joanne Redden: Now I've lost sound.
Madeleine Gregoire: Lost sound.
Maria Fung: Me too!
John Vogt: audio gone
Susan Pustejovsky: me too
Steve Hennagin: unsounded
Donna Nonnenkamp: New batteries are coming!!!
Janet Mills: My computer completely froze up when I tried to
use GAP. I
will get Quicktime and VNC
Steve Hennagin: i can hear again
3:40 PM
Maria Fung: Back!
Donna Nonnenkamp: Everyone have sound now!
Donna Nonnenkamp: ?
Blake Boursaw: yes
Kathryn Weld: I tried minimizing my window.
Robert Quinn: yes
Susan Pustejovsky: yes
Kathryn Weld: OK- Finally got it.
Donna Nonnenkamp: Good
Russell Blyth:
Donna Nonnenkamp: Section 3
Nora Strasser: I still can't get the function to load in
even though I
know where it is.
Michael Engquist: Should the function file have a txt
extension on
windows?
Russell Blyth: No extension seems to be working - it that
correct?
Michael Engquist: I don't know yet.
Russell Blyth: Any Windows user who has it working?
Blake Boursaw: For sylows, if I save it in gap4r4/bin and
read it in as
Read("C:/gap4r4/bin/sylows.txt"); it works.
Russell Blyth: Thanks Blake
3:45 PM
Nora Strasser: It worked!
Russell Blyth: Steve; answer to how (2,3) arise in S4 rep of
rotations: on
vertex diagram: axis from midpoint of 2-3 edge to midpoint
of 5-8
edge
3:50 PM
Russell Blyth: On diagonal diagram, gives (2,3), and fixes
diags 1 and 4
(although switches vertices 1 and 7, and 4 and 6)
Blake Boursaw: what does "pc group" mean?
Robert Quinn: what does "pc group" mean in "pc group of size
60"?
Russell Blyth: power commutator
Robert Quinn: thanks
Russell Blyth: it's the kind of presentation used
Russell Blyth: that's why it's listed as having 4 gens, even
though it is
cyclic
Donna Nonnenkamp: Any questions?
Steve Hennagin: how do we get copies of each sylow subgroup
with a
separate name for each?
Steve Hennagin: l;
Russell Blyth: Note that's a list
3:55 PM
Robert Quinn: Will you put the gap log files on the web
today?
Russell Blyth: Yes!
Russell Blyth: am one is there already
Robert Quinn: great, thx
Maria Fung: Thank you! I finally got it to read files...
Thanks!
Russell Blyth: It's handy to have lists if you're doing any
programming
in GAP
Russell Blyth: Steve, is that OK?
Steve Hennagin: thank you, just right
Russell Blyth: Other questions?
Michael Engquist: Do you give homework assignments which
require
GAP?
Russell Blyth: Follow up?
Steve Hennagin: how do you get a particular element out of a
group?
Susan Pustejovsky: gtg, see you tomorrow
Russell Blyth: Like?
Susan Pustejovsky has left this chat.
Steve Hennagin: thinking about the list representation
Steve Hennagin: and i've lost sound
Russell Blyth: Sound for anyone else?
Joanne Redden: it's in and out
Robert Quinn: yes, I have it
John Vogt: sound gone
4:00 PM
Michael Engquist has left this chat.
Nora Strasser: no sound
Nikolaus Vonessen: I have sound
Blake Boursaw: i have sound
Nikolaus Vonessen: good
Robert Quinn: I have sound
Joanne Redden: The image has frozen and the sound is in and
out.
Russell Blyth: Thanks
Russell Blyth: Must be slow network
Kathryn Weld has left this chat.
Russell Blyth: Bye, in advance for anyone suddenly leaving
Russell Blyth: We'll see you tomorrow!
Steve Hennagin: my thought: getting the list of groups, then
assign H:
=list[2], say, then wanting to get the third element from H
Nora Strasser has left this chat.
John Vogt has left this chat.
Russell Blyth: Yes, so say H[3]
Robert Quinn: Thanks, I enjoyed today's session.
Maria Fung: Do we have any homework for tomorrow, other than
finishing and thinking about the activities from today?
Richard Wagner has left this chat.
Joanne Redden: See you tomorrow.
Joanne Redden has left this chat.
Russell Blyth: You could also say list[2][3]
Janet Mills has left this chat.
Russell Blyth: It's just like a regular programming language
Nikolaus Vonessen: Have a nice day!
Steve Hennagin: i get an error on that. thnks!
Nikolaus Vonessen has left this chat.
Madeleine Gregoire: Have a good evening!
Russell Blyth: You too!
