Exploring Abstract Algebra with Computer Software

A PREP Workshop

AIM log - Monday June 28, 10 am - 11:30 am

Michael Engquist: Can you comment on how to use GAP in a
directed
study as opposed to a formal class (if there is any
difference)?
Richard Wagner: Is the IP number for VNC going to change
every day?
Donna Nonnenkamp: We will try another new battery
Maria Fung: No sound again for me too...
Maria Fung: Sorry I can hear you now!
John Vogt: audio back
Steve Hennagin: I plan to try it out in my Sr Seminar class
this fall
Donna Nonnenkamp: Hopefully the IP will not change every
day- our
university uses DHCP so there is always a chance it will
change -we will
let you know every morning what it is
Maria Fung: Do you teach in a computer classroom?
10:25 AM
Steve Hennagin: what text(s) are people using?
Maria Fung: Thank you for clarifying this. I could do once a
week visit
to a computer classroom (it is in a different building).
Michael Engquist: Students don't like command line
interface. Any
options.
Joanne Redden: me too.
John Vogt: me too
Nikolaus Vonessen: Could we get a list of participants with
real names
(not just screen names)?
Steve Hennagin: We use linux, our students are used to
command line.
And, you can guess my name
Michael Engquist: Do you let students use GAP during exams?
Russell Blyth: I don't, but it could be done
Steve Hennagin: I am having problems getting vnc come up?!
10:30 AM
Donna Nonnenkamp: Go ahead and close vnc and then reopen it
Donna Nonnenkamp: The IP you will use is 165.134.131.41
Donna Nonnenkamp: no password
Donna Nonnenkamp: Did vnc come up Steve?
10:35 AM
Steve Hennagin: still no vnc!?
Donna Nonnenkamp: Are you using a pc?
Donna Nonnenkamp: Steve- are you using a PC?
Steve Hennagin: i am using a windows box
Donna Nonnenkamp: What version of VNC are you using?
Nikolaus Vonessen: Is there an easy way to convert output
using x1, x2
into an expression using r, s?
Robert Quinn: what would result if the given arrangement
were not
possible?
Steve Hennagin: i think v 4
Steve Hennagin: do i use vnc server or vnc user
Russell Blyth: user
Steve Hennagin: it asks for a password
10:40 AM
Donna Nonnenkamp: User or viewer
Donna Nonnenkamp: no password
Donna Nonnenkamp: 165.134.131.41 is the ip for vnc
Steve Hennagin: got that. i am in user
Donna Nonnenkamp: good
Steve Hennagin: msg: vnc authentication enabled, no pwd
specified;
pwd dialog shown
Nikolaus Vonessen: (1,4,3,2) and (1, 4, 5, 6)
Linda Sundbye: 1234,1456
Russell Blyth: hit enter, Steve, to bypass password
Steve Hennagin: done
Russell Blyth: Steve, is it working?
Dorothy Zeiser: The picture froze and I have lost audio.
Steve Hennagin: no: user mode won't run.
Donna Nonnenkamp: Steve- you should use viewer
Donna Nonnenkamp: Do you have TightVNC?
10:45 AM
Steve Hennagin: i don't know
Steve Hennagin: i have real vnc
Russell Blyth: Dorothy, do you have pic/audio?
Steve Hennagin: and it worked when we tested it
Donna Nonnenkamp: Steve Tight vnc might work better for you.
It is
the version I am using
Michael Engquist: Have you ever tried implementing this
puzzle using
Java or JavaScript?
Russell Blyth: I sent out a list of participants with AIM
names on the list
Russell Blyth: No - but it would be interesting to implement
Dorothy Zeiser: yes
10:50 AM
Donna Nonnenkamp: Steve.. I would quit vnc and try it again.
I am not
sure why it is not working today when it worked during
testing. Let me
know if it comes up.
Dorothy Zeiser: Pic froze again and no audio.
Dorothy Zeiser: ok, again
Steve Hennagin has left this chat.
Steve Hennagin has joined this chat.
Donna Nonnenkamp: Hi Steve-
Michael Engquist: What about negative powers?
Steve Hennagin: i now have TightVNC, talk me through it
Donna Nonnenkamp: You want to use the tightvnc viewer and I
use
best compression
Russell Blyth: Michael - negative powers are fine
Donna Nonnenkamp: The ip to enter is 165.134.131.41 and now
password
Donna Nonnenkamp: no password
10:55 AM
Steve Hennagin: i have vnc
Russell Blyth: all - restart quicktime with new URL
Donna Nonnenkamp: We are stopping the broadcast and will
restart
quicktime with a new URL
Maria Fung: I am having a great time but I need to go
teach... so I will
"see" you again this afternoon.
Russell Blyth: OK, Maria
Russell Blyth: See you then
Russell Blyth: QT URL is
Donna Nonnenkamp: rtsp://165.134.240.35/video0628am2.sdp
Donna Nonnenkamp: It is the same as before but am2.sdp
Russell Blyth: Everyone OK?
Joanne Redden: Yes.
Dorothy Zeiser: yes
Janet Mills: yes
Madeleine Gregoire: Yes
Kathryn Weld: Yes
John Vogt: yes

Susan Pustejovsky: yes
Russell Blyth: Any probs?
Linda Sundbye: yes
Richard Wagner: I still am without VNC
11:00 AM
Russell Blyth: What VNC viewer do you have?
Kathryn Weld: I lost VCN
Richard Wagner: The change in the IP number is the cause. I
contacted
my computer center and they are working on it.
Russell Blyth: Restart VNC, Kathy
Donna Nonnenkamp: Use the following IP 165.134.131.41
Kathryn Weld: I have it. Thanks.
Russell Blyth: Richard,
Russell Blyth: the IP address could possibly change again
Russell Blyth: Can they open the port 5900 to anything from
165.134.131.nnn?
Richard Wagner: That is going to be a problem
Russell Blyth: If we're lucky it won't change again
Russell Blyth: It didn't all week last year
Russell Blyth: How about the two IPs, today's and last
week's?
Russell Blyth: If it changes, it is likely to go back to the
old one
11:05 AM
Steve Hennagin: why did you use a 2?
Steve Hennagin: i have no handouts
Russell Blyth: Did they not arrive?
Russell Blyth: By email?
Russell Blyth: We'll be sending out more each day
Russell Blyth: They're also available from the workshop
website
11:15 AM
Kathryn Weld: I just lost sound
Russell Blyth: Anyone else?
Nikolaus Vonessen: The size of the conjugacy class times the
order of
the centralizer of an element is the order of the group in
question.
Russell Blyth: Sound, Kathy?
Kathryn Weld: Nope-
Donna Nonnenkamp: Kathy - Quit quicktime and then restart it
Kathryn Weld: OK
Donna Nonnenkamp: You will not have to renter the URL
because it
should be saved
11:20 AM
Russell Blyth: Sound?
Kathryn Weld: Got it
Russell Blyth: OK
Donna Nonnenkamp: Good
Richard Wagner: I can't get back into Quicktime
Russell Blyth: You appear to be still connected to quicktime
Donna Nonnenkamp: Richard quit quicktime and then reopen it
Donna Nonnenkamp: Open url in new player
Donna Nonnenkamp: rtsp://165.134.240.35/video0628am2.sdp
Richard Wagner: In the east, it is afternoon. Should the URL
be
changed?
Russell Blyth: No
Russell Blyth: Not yet!
Donna Nonnenkamp: Type in the url do not click on the link
Donna Nonnenkamp: We will let you know when to change the
URL
Donna Nonnenkamp: It is based on when we change tapes
Russell Blyth: The newest version of GAP was released about
two
months ago
Russell Blyth: There are some improvements that we're still
discovering
Richard Wagner: I get the message: 10060 Disconnected
Russell Blyth: In Quicktime?
Richard Wagner: Yes
11:25 AM
Nikolaus Vonessen: Maybe this might help withQuicktime
problems: I
accidentally disconnected several times from Quicktime when
typing
while the Quicktime window was active (instead of aim or
gap).
Susan Pustejovsky: gtg
Russell Blyth: Richard ...
Donna Nonnenkamp: 10061 and 10060 : this is a Windows only
error.
Usually caused from a mis-configured client Check the
Transport Setup
configuration.
Russell Blyth: Susan, see you later
Russell Blyth: Richard, 4 steps
Richard Wagner: Where is that?
Nikolaus Vonessen: I tried to "automate" making the
computations in
Project 1.4. What is a good way to generate the n-cylce
(1,2,3,...,2)
given the positive integer n?
Russell Blyth: Coming up
Donna Nonnenkamp: Launch QuickTime
Nikolaus Vonessen: Oops, I ment the n-cycle (1,2,...,n).
Donna Nonnenkamp: From the Edit menu select Preferences and
then
QuickTime Preference
Donna Nonnenkamp: There are two options that need to be
changed,
the first is Streaming Transport, or how the data flows
between the
server and the client machine, the second is Streaming
Proxy.
Donna Nonnenkamp: From the pop-up menu at the top of the
QuickTime Preference window, select Streaming Transport.
Russell Blyth: Nikolaus - there's a way using the List
command
11:30 AM
Donna Nonnenkamp: What do you see under the streaming
transport?
Richard Wagner: OK
Richard Wagner: A dot next to Automatically deter.....
Donna Nonnenkamp: Try use http port id and select 80
Robert Quinn: Can you create scripts or programs in text
files and run
them in GAP?
Joanne Redden: yes
Russell Blyth: Yes! We'll see an example this afternoon
Richard Wagner: I got the same error message
Donna Nonnenkamp: Then Richard close the window -exit out of
quicktime completely and then restart it and put the url in
Kathryn Weld: gtg
11:35 AM
Kathryn Weld has left this chat.
Russell Blyth: See you later
Linda Sundbye: gtg too
Russell Blyth: OK, Juli is wrapping up.
Richard Wagner: The same error message
Russell Blyth: Nikolaus, I'm looking for theanswer to your Q
Steve Hennagin: send me the handouts and i will get them for
the
afternoon session
Russell Blyth: I will be sending more out over the break
Nikolaus Vonessen: Thanks, Russel
Russell Blyth: Steve, did they not come via the list on
Friday?
Juli Rainbolt: you can also get the handouts off our website
Donna Nonnenkamp: Richard - Is port 80 blocked ?
Linda Sundbye has left this chat.
Steve Hennagin: not found this am when i checked
Steve Hennagin: where on the web?
Russell Blyth: Anyone else not get the handouts?
Russell Blyth: euler.slu.edu
Russell Blyth: follow the links off that page
John Vogt: I didn't get them by email, either
Russell Blyth: OK - are you getting any list messages?
Russell Blyth: It may that attachments are getting stripped
by some
mail programs
Steve Hennagin: i got it - will have what i need. thank you
Russell Blyth: It was a large message with the files for the
first 4
sections
Russell Blyth: Anyone else?
John Vogt: no problem, i got them off the website
Michael Engquist: Is there a way to use GAP's internal
methods to do a
