Abstract Algebra with GAP

A PREP Workshop

AIM log - Friday July 18, 10 am - 11:30 am

Donna Nonnenkamp: VNC is 165.134.131.27 and to connect to video rtsp://165.134.240.33/video0718a.sdp and to connect to audio rtsp://165.134.240.33/audio0718a.sdp
Dominic Soda: how do you get those cute little balloons?
Donna Nonnenkamp: remember to type into quicktime
Math and Computer Science: she is using iChat
Math and Computer Science: a chat app for Mac OS X
Robert Talbert went offline before accepting your invitation.
brooksbankpa: how exciting!
Donna Nonnenkamp: Can you hear the thunder?
sklarjk has joined this chat.
Carter Lyons has joined this chat.
Ken Yanosko: Yes, I hear it. If you suddenly disappear, we'll know why!
10:00AM
Donna Nonnenkamp: Hope not!
Meral Arnavut has joined this chat.
Dominic Soda: It is very dark and much lighting here just 20 miles west of you
Ronald Biggers has joined this chat.
janetlbeery has joined this chat.
Carter Lyons: What about that A?
10:05AM
Ken Yanosko: The A in AUGUST
Donna Nonnenkamp: Was there a typo?
Carter Lyons: There were two or more bits of error.
Tracy Hamilton: I don't think there was a typo--I got it to work--only one error.
Ken Yanosko: Yes, but it seems to involve some trial and error.
Ken Yanosko: Getting the A, I mean.
Tracy Hamilton: You have to choose alpha carefully to make sure you choose a generator.
brooksbankpa: Thanks for the mail Jim; this will certainly be useful.
Ken Yanosko: Ah, I see, Tracy. That will do it.
Tracy Hamilton: Glad to help, Ken.
10:15AM
drvazz: anyone else lose video?
sklarjk: I did.
Tracy Hamilton: yes
brooksbankpa: I did
Tracy Hamilton: and audio
Carter Lyons: lost audio
drvazz: right, both
Meral Arnavut: I lost video and VNC.
janetlbeery: yes, both
Tong Wu: Both
brooksbankpa: Must be the storm?
Tracy Hamilton: vnc gone
Donna Nonnenkamp has left this chat.
sklarjk: My video is back.
Ken Yanosko: A/V is on but breaking up badly. VNC died.
Meral Arnavut: Video is back.
janetlbeery: yes, both back
drvazz: back on now here, too
Tracy Hamilton: back up
sklarjk: It's all good here.
Tong Wu: video is back
brooksbankpa: audio and video back now
Dominic Soda: video good
Math and Computer Science: checking
Ken Yanosko: VNC back.
brooksbankpa: vnc died but back now
Meral Arnavut: VNC back.
Dominic Soda: vnc good
Carter Lyons: Lost VNC, both VNC and quick time are back for me.
Math and Computer Science: every thing should be back now - power surge?
Ken Yanosko: ok now
Robert Talbert went offline before accepting your invitation.
Tong Wu: Ok here
Dominic Soda: What is NF?
Donna Nonnenkamp has joined this chat.
Donna Nonnenkamp: hi
10:20AM
Carter Lyons: I am confused about the notation. In CF(n) n is the degree of the cyclotomic extension. In Pi_n n is the nth cyclotomic polynomial. Is this correct?
10:25AM
Carter Lyons: Oops. Phi_n.
Carter Lyons: Okay.
Dominic Soda: Does gap "factor" finite abelian groups;
10:30AM
Dominic Soda: yes as a direct product
Janet McShane: Could you do that please? Construct the group Z2xZ16 and then compare.
10:35AM
Janet McShane: Thank you!
Janet McShane: That was a good review.
Dominic Soda: The [1,4] of NF(5,[1,4]) is the GaloisStabilizer of the NF
Dominic Soda: I used Known Attributes etc...
brooksbankpa: It describes the primitive element of the field
10:40AM
brooksbankpa: E(15)+E(15)^2+E(15)^4+E(15)^8 for example
brooksbankpa: for [1,2,4,8]
Tracy Hamilton: you cubed e3 not e2
10:45AM
brooksbankpa: Are we trying to get all of the subgroups?
10:50AM
brooksbankpa: LatticeSubgroups can be used but, as you say, it's worth mucking around with.
Robert Talbert went offline before accepting your invitation.
10:55AM
Donna Nonnenkamp: switching tapes
Donna Nonnenkamp: tape is installed
11:00AM
Janet McShane: Did you say earlier that we need to find 14 subgroups?
brooksbankpa: It would be a nice exercise to have the students actually sketch the subgroup and subfield lattices and compare their structure. GAP makes this quite easy (once we've figured out the NF notation anyway!)
11:05AM
Dominic Soda: > GaloisStabilizer( )For an abelian number field , `GaloisStabilizer' rall integers $k$ in the range from $1$ to the conductorthe field automorphism induced by raising roots of un$k$-th power acts trivially on .
Dominic Soda: The mapping sigma->sigma^k fix the associated NF in CF where sigma is the generator of CF I think.
11:10AM
Tong Wu has left this chat.
Tong Wu has declined the invitation to this chat.
Tong Wu has joined this chat.
Dominic Soda: There are 27 if we "mind the GAP"
11:15AM
Math and Computer Science: yes - we are trying to find the 25 non proper ones
Janet McShane: Are your 12 and 15 the same?
Math and Computer Science: (we know by the previous exercise there are 27 subfields of CF(60) so there must be 27 subgroups
Janet McShane: Okay --- it's just hard to read the board. Thanks.
Math and Computer Science: when we get the whole list we will do a close up of the board.
11:20AM
Donna Nonnenkamp: Tom is going to zoom in on the board
11:25AM
Ken Yanosko: Since the group is abelian, ConjugacyClassesSubgroups(g) lists all the subgroups. Can we then get GAP to list the elements of these subgroups?
11:30AM
Ken Yanosko: Those are your 27 subgroups, in terms of generators.
Carter Lyons: The resolution is not fine enoughon my machine.
Math and Computer Science: I can send a print out of the subgroups electronically if you would like - just send me an email requesting it.
Tracy Hamilton: Juli, can you post it to the website?
11:35AM
Math and Computer Science: o.k.
Tracy Hamilton: thanks
Math and Computer Science: it will probably not be there until monday thought
Tracy Hamilton: that's fine
Tracy Hamilton: i knew what you meant
Carter Lyons: I will get it off of the website next week.
Ronald Biggers has left this chat.
sklarjk: Bye!
Carter Lyons has left this chat.
Meral Arnavut has left this chat.
Ken Yanosko has left this chat.
sklarjk has left this chat.
janetlbeery: I'm going to e-mail you some questions about classroom practice right now, for possible use in the afternoon session.
drvazz has left this chat.
Donna Nonnenkamp: Thanks Janet-that is great
Tracy Hamilton has left this chat.
Jim Woeppel has left this chat.
Math and Computer Science: send it to either rblythrd@slu.edu or rainbolt@slu.edu
Math and Computer Science: or better yet to both
Math and Computer Science: correction: blythrd@slu.edu
janetlbeery: I was going to send them to everyone!
Math and Computer Science: even better
