Carter Lyons: What does "error loading content" mean?
Jim Woeppel has joined this chat.
Math and Computer Science: Carter - in what program?
Janet McShane has joined this chat.
Ayan Mahalanobis has joined this chat.
Carter Lyons: In the Chat room box below the area where I can enter
comments I got "Loading content" followed by "Error loading content"
Ayan Mahalanobis: I have that too.
Robert Talbert: I don't think the Content box at the bottom of the chat
screen is important. I think it's just a place for AOL to advertise. If
you click on "Less" it goes away completely.
sklarjk: My video just stopped working.
brooksbankpa: Mine too.
2:30PM
Ayan Mahalanobis: Mine three
Math and Computer Science: it should be back now
sklarjk: Yup!
Math and Computer Science: we are stopping broadcasting for second.
Carter Lyons: I am getting both audio and video
Carter Lyons: Just lost both.
drvazz has joined this chat.
Juli Rainbolt: nothing missed yet, Dana
drvazz: Is Quicktime broadcasting yet?
Juli Rainbolt: video runnimg
sklarjk: Is it? I'm not getting anything.
drvazz: me either
brooksbankpa: nor I
Math and Computer Science: broadcasting was on and off for awhile - please
try again if you had problems
Donna Nonnenkamp: Open quicktime program. Then open url in new player for
audio type in rtsp://165.134.240.33/audio0714p.sdp Then file open url in
new window to open the video stream type
rtsp://165.134.240.33/video0714p.sdp
Robert Talbert: I had to quit QUicktime and restart. Works fine now.
sklarjk: For me too.
Juli Rainbolt: right
Donna Nonnenkamp: good
Ken Yanosko: good
Janet McShane: good
drvazz: Aha...714p, not 714a
Donna Nonnenkamp: yes for pm
Meral Arnavut has joined this chat.
brooksbankpa: fine now
Silvia La Falce has joined this chat.
2:35PM
Meral Arnavut: Hello again!
Dominic Soda: audio and video are gone
Tong Wu: TSU Team is here.
Donna Nonnenkamp: Dominic- start audio first only, then add video
Dominic Soda: are you broadcasting audio
Donna Nonnenkamp: yes
Donna Nonnenkamp: go to the website for the course
Donna Nonnenkamp: Dominic are you able to hear us?
Ronald Biggers has joined this chat.
Dominic Soda: no i lost you agin
Donna Nonnenkamp: Hi Ronald
Ronald Biggers: Hello
2:40PM
Math and Computer Science: Ronald - the class is started you should be
seeing and hearing Russell.
sklarjk: Do we need to do anything to install the package?
Math and Computer Science: no - the file just needs to be in the gap4r3
folder.
Donna Nonnenkamp: Dominic, close quick time completely and then load the
audio only rtsp://165.134.240.33/audio0714p.sdp - This is the same as this
morning but a p instead of an a Type this in after clicking on file open
url in new player
Donna Nonnenkamp: Dominic make sure that the volume is turned up
Donna Nonnenkamp: Ronald are you able to see and hear us?
sklarjk: Mine can't read "orderfrequency".
drvazz: mine either
Silvia La Falce: same problem here.
sklarjk: Should it be in a specific folder within the gap4r3 folder?
Robert Talbert: The "F" in frequency needs to be capitalized
drvazz: that's not the problem here
Tracy Hamilton: mine either
sklarjk: That's not my problem either.
Robert Talbert: I also had to put the file in the "bin" directory
sklarjk: It says it must exist and be readable
brooksbankpa: which directory is GAP fired from?
Tracy Hamilton: mine is doing the same thing Jessica's is
sklarjk: I typed it in exactly as written.
janetlbeery has left this chat.
Robert Talbert: The file has to be in the same foilder as the GAP program
itself -- not just the gap4r3 folder.
sklarjk: We put it in gap4r3. Where should it go?
Robert Talbert: The path that worked for me was cgap4r3\bin. I'm on a pc.
Dominic Soda: I could not connect to the web site, I just typed it in.
Carter Lyons: Somehow I missed the website for the course. Could you type
that for me?
2:45PM
Dominic Soda: Yes
Juli Rainbolt: http://euler.slu.edu/PREP/GAPPREP.html
sklarjk: Mine still doesn't work, even in the bin folder with the GAP
program  .
drvazz: I even moved it to bin, but still not working...it made it into a
text file
Tracy Hamilton: i moved it to bin and it's still not working
Donna Nonnenkamp: Dominic then click on workshop program and there are
links to the sections
drvazz: what should the extension be?
Dominic Soda: I just typed it into the interpreter
Juli Rainbolt: it should be a text file. Try .txt
brooksbankpa: I don't know windows, but the file needs to be in the same
directory that GAP is executed from.
sklarjk: Try using: Read("orderFrequency.txt");
Juli Rainbolt: does that work?
Juli Rainbolt: It may be that the browser attached an extension
Tracy Hamilton: Jessica, that didn't work for me
drvazz: tried it...doesn't work for me
sklarjk: It works for me!
janetlbeery has joined this chat.
Tracy Hamilton: my tutorial files are on my desktop
sklarjk: I put the text file in my bin folder, and used the command:
Read("orderFrequency.txt"); in GAP.
sklarjk: I'm on a PC.
Juli Rainbolt: click on the file orderFrequency and click on Properties to
see if there is an extension
janetlbeery: Thanks. I'm back.
Donna Nonnenkamp: good janet
drvazz: me, too; it's txt for me but still not working
Juli Rainbolt: who is able to read the file?
Dominic Soda: it is 4 lines long , could you discuss the program whwn we
get there
Ayan Mahalanobis: God idea
Juli Rainbolt: I'm about to get there
Ayan Mahalanobis: Im eant good
sklarjk: I'm good.
Meral Arnavut: I am good too.
2:50PM
Dominic Soda: not in win2000
Juli Rainbolt: anyone able to Read a file from a File menu in GAP?
Tracy Hamilton: no
drvazz: no luck for me yet
Robert Talbert: The PC version runs in DOS and doesn't give the special
menu that the mac has. It gives only the standard window menu
(close/edit/etc.)
brooksbankpa: if all else fails, can't you copy and paste the code into
the GAP session?
sklarjk: Or no menu, in XP  .
Meral Arnavut: No I cannot!!
drvazz: cut and paste worked OK for me
Dominic Soda: i can't see the gap session
Ken Yanosko: On a pc running windows, the file to be "Read" must be in the
"Start in" directory listed under "Properties".
brooksbankpa: the browser is blocking the session
Dominic Soda: no
Donna Nonnenkamp: Dominic is vnc working for you?
Carter Lyons: I can only see the code for Order Frequency
Meral Arnavut: I cannot see Gap Session..
Ayan Mahalanobis: I can see gap session.
Dominic Soda: yes vnc is but the gap window isn't
Juli Rainbolt: we'll wait a moment - there seems to be a delay in getting
vnc updated
Juli Rainbolt: I have the GAP window visible
Jim Woeppel has left this chat.
Juli Rainbolt: Any change?
Janet McShane: Not for me
Carter Lyons: no change
Meral Arnavut: No changes..
Dominic Soda: no
drvazz: not here
Jim Woeppel has joined this chat.
Robert Talbert: No change -- I am viewing the web browser screen with the
workshop program on it.
2:55PM
Juli Rainbolt: I'm going to stop the vnc broadcast and restart it. That
means you all should close vnc and restart
Donna Nonnenkamp: make sure you have the correct IP 165.134.131.27 for
Russell's computer to be visible via
Juli Rainbolt: One moment
Juli Rainbolt: vnc down
Juli Rainbolt: all quit vnc please
Juli Rainbolt: vnc restarted
Juli Rainbolt: Better?
brooksbankpa: can see GAP now
Robert Talbert: Ahh, that
Donna Nonnenkamp: VNC is back
Dominic Soda: okay here
Robert Talbert: s better.
Silvia La Falce: it's fine here
Carter Lyons: got it!
Janet McShane: Yes now I can see the gap window
Meral Arnavut: I can see it now.
Tracy Hamilton: I got orderFrequency to work by typing in the code from
the file--I never could get it to "Read" and I couldn't cut and paste
Robert Talbert: Having problems with VNC again -- it loads, but then quits
immediately/
Math and Computer Science: I (Juli) will show you how to save this GAP
functions for later us.
Math and Computer Science: - tomorrow
Robert Talbert: update -- vnc seems to be OK now.
Tong Wu: We can hear you. and we can see your computer. Which websit
should we go?. TSU server was down since Thursday. We could not check our
emails.
Math and Computer Science: Robert - are you using tight VNC or real VNC?
Robert Talbert: real vnc
sklarjk: Would just doing D10:=DihedralGroup(20) work as well?
Math and Computer Science: Robert - o.k. real vnc is the one that tends
not to quit out as oftern.
3:00PM
brooksbankpa: natural rep for D(20) is as a PC-group, but it will work
sklarjk: Ahh, I see, it puts the generators in terms of f and r if you do
that. Got it.
Math and Computer Science: Tong - the website referred to is the site for
this workshop - it has some files we are using.
Tong Wu: We can see your computer and hear you. But we can not interactive
with your computer.
Donna Nonnenkamp: You are just in viewing mode Tong
Math and Computer Science: Tong - you should be able to see Russell's
computer screen - a gap session.
Carter Lyons: :YOu; have D40 not D20
Tong Wu: How can we change the mode.
Carter Lyons: Sorry. I see my error.
Math and Computer Science: d20 means the group of order 40 (symmetries of
the 20 gon)
3:05PM
Math and Computer Science: Tong - mode? I don't understand your question.
Tong Wu: We can see your PC screen and hear you. Is that all.
Donna Nonnenkamp: Do you have video?
Donna Nonnenkamp: Go to quick time again and file open url in new player
and enter the following to view the video
rtsp://165.134.240.33/video0714p.sdp
Donna Nonnenkamp: DO NOT CLICK ON the link Tong type it in and do not
close the audio window
Tong Wu: we got the video and audio
Donna Nonnenkamp: Great
3:10PM
brooksbankpa: can type, for example,
List(AllSmallGroups(40),x->orderFrequency(x))
Dominic Soda: what do you load to get these tools?
sklarjk: dsoda, they should just be there automatically. At least, they
were on my PC.
3:15PM
Donna Nonnenkamp: WE are changing tapes, give us a minute or two
Dominic Soda: they aren't on mine
Donna Nonnenkamp: Dominic they are part of the package
janetlbeery: Hmmm...they are on mine and I'm on a Mac. Did you type in the
orderFrequency function?
Math and Computer Science: That might be the problem - the list construct
is a feature of GAP
3:20PM
Dominic Soda: What about finding all subgroups of S4 in GAP
3:25PM
brooksbankpa: you can do it. In fact there are graphics interfaces which
display the subgroup lattice.
Dominic Soda: I thought it might be usefull when discussing Sylows theorems
brooksbankpa: e.g. LatticeSubgroups(G);
Dominic Soda: thanks
3:40PM
brooksbankpa: you can also use shortcut: c:=ConjugacyClasses(G);
List(c,x->Size(x));
3:45PM
brooksbankpa: Have your students ever tried to beyond A6 with this method?
Math and Computer Science: not beyond a6
3:55PM
Math and Computer Science: Questions?
Janet McShane: Could you put a list of the participants on the web page
together with their e-mails and aim names on the web page?
drvazz: I'd like that, too, along with their institutions
Juli Rainbolt: sure Janet - I'll do that tonight
sklarjk: Could you speak a little louder Russell? I'm having trouble
hearing you.
Carter Lyons: If I select random element a and random element b I am not
able to ask for the order of a*b. Must I write a*b in terms fo the
generators?
4:00PM
Ken Yanosko: Thanks.
Carter Lyons: This was in the contezxt of the exercises in D10 for example
Carter Lyons: Keep going
Carter Lyons: That did not happen for me. I will check my log for errors.
brooksbankpa: I just tried with D10; seems to be OK
Carter Lyons: The group was D10. your example shows that it works in
general, it just didn't work for me.
brooksbankpa: what error message did it give you?
drvazz: You guys are doing a great job, by the way...I keep nodding at my
computer when you say things and forgetting that you can't see me.
Carter Lyons: I must have typed something incorrectly. I will chek my log.
Carter Lyons: Yes.
4:05PM
Dominic Soda: How about the audio log. It is more important than the video
log.
Dominic Soda: thanks
Jim Woeppel: Was the material on the cube put on the Web?
sklarjk: bye, thanks!
sklarjk has left this chat.
brooksbankpa: Thanks all at SLU!
