Classifying Modules by Extensions.

Abstract: Ring theorists have for years studied direct sum decompositions of modules motivated by the fact that finitely generated Z-modules can classified using such decompositions. In spite of these efforts, for most rings no analogous classification exists.
In my talk I will consider a classification in which the direct sum operation is replaced by extensions. That is, we will consider a module B to be "composed" of modules A and C, not when B is isomorphic to the direct sum of A and C, but rather when there is an exact sequence 0 -> A -> B -> C ->0.
